Peter got a chance to test Sony's new VR headset at GDC 2014. He compares it to Oculus and talks about the future of VR.
Will Bergan's insight:

Compares tech specs between the two, production potential, and consumer markets. Both very close to each other at the moment as both are still prototypes. Hopefully the two headsets drive each other to develop better consumer products to really put VR in the mainstream gaming world.

Using Oculus Rift, strap yourself into a modern car and see a crash test from the dummy's point of view.
Will Bergan's insight:

Not only used for gaming. The use of the Rift show the closest perspective of a car crash possible as it is used with cars loaded with a crash scenario in a movement system which together simulate accidents. A great move for a gaming device to be used as a real life educational tool.

GDC: Sony Reveals Project Morpheus PlayStation 4 VR Headset - IGN

GDC: Sony Reveals Project Morpheus PlayStation 4 VR Headset - IGN | Virtual Reality - Oculus Rift | Scoop.it

annouAs expected, Sony has debuted its Oculus Rift competitor in the form of a virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4.

Will Bergan's insight:

Sony announces a PS4 VR Headset! Very early days for Project Morpheus compared to the Rift. Sony's version is being designed around existing technology, creating very early limitations for the capabilities of making the project successful because if people need to spend lots of money to first buy the Headset, and a PS4, and extra peripherals like the move, Sony camera, and what ever may be designed to support the Morpheus, people may just decide to get the more flexible, cheaper, Oculus Rift.

What is the Oculus Rift?

What is the Oculus Rift? | Virtual Reality - Oculus Rift | Scoop.it
The virtual reality experience long promised in science fiction is finally becoming a reality with the Oculus Rift. Here are the facts.
Will Bergan's insight:

Oculus Rift. A virtual reality headset being designed currently for pc only, no console supported as of yet. It is still being designed through the help of developers such as gearbox software and valve. These are possibly the two most important developers to be working on such a project with as Gearbox are responsible for the Unreal gaming engine and Valve are the creators of Steam. If the Oculus Rift gets designed specifically to suit these two developers, who knows where it will end up!

OVERVIEW

This article provides an extensive overview of the Oculus Rift technology. It covers multiple topics in a FAQ style, and assumes no prior knowledge from the reader.

DATE

26 March, 2014: Very recent and therefore likely to be up-to-date information.

CREDIBILITY

The authors Kevin Ohannessian and Michael Andronico are published by the website Tom’s Guide, which is part of a larger tech publication network called Bestof Media. While the presence of multiple authors and the professional look of the site are good credentials, there is a chance that a large site publishing many articles may not spend a lot of time checking each one. No sources are provided by the authors.

AUDIENCE

The title ‘What is the Oculus Rift?’ indicates that this is an article aimed at those with little or no knowledge of the technology who are just after an overview. As Tom’s Guide is a tech site, readers are likely to have an interest in technology.

COVERAGE

The article provides extensive information for readers hoping to increase their general knowledge of the Oculus Rift. As it is intended for people relatively new to the technology, it would not be appropriate as technical documentation for developers.

OBJECTIVITY

The article appears to be fair and objective.

Good Game Stories - Preview: Oculus Rift

Good Game Stories - Preview: Oculus Rift | Virtual Reality - Oculus Rift | Scoop.it
Virtual Reality isnt a new idea by a long shot its been tried before and its been rubbish So what makes this one different?
Will Bergan's insight:

Good Games' review of the early version of the Rift. The main issues they find are low resolution screens and motion sickness. With newer version, the two screens are being continuously upgraded as new technology is available to make them as HD as possible. The motions tracking has also been improved significantly in later models. This progress is what is getting developers more involved with the technology now that they can see that the use of this technology isn't going anywhere.

Leo Chan's curator insight, May 29, 2014 1:17 AM

Beside 3D Printer, Virtual Reality is going to be the next big thing.

As it can control what we are seeing, it can provide additional information such as direction or restaurant rating at real time.

Oculus Rift is one of a VR Glass makers, it is not like Google Glass, It is fully surrounded your eyes and It can simulate the virtual world.

Although the current development of Oculus Rift are mainly focused on game related, i think it have more potential than just gaming!
