DIY: Physical Computing at Play (Interview)

An interview with Michael J. Newman and Scott Hutchinson, who were part of the transformation of a library staircase into a game.  The biggest takeaway for me: (paraphrasing) Having the ability to go and do something without knowing the reason as to why you're doing it...  if something interests you or clicks for some reason and you're excited about doing it, you do it and figure out the practical output later.

 

I think that's the heart of play and tinkering and (to me) it's one problem with schools.

Milton Glaser talks about the path to understanding, moving toward what you don't know, and getting out of your expertise.  To paraphrase: the most significant works come out of misunderstanding--doing when you don't know what it is that you're doing.  It is the path to attempt to understand that is what you're looking for.  The path by which you arrive at understanding is the whole point of the game.
