Did you know that 23% of America is illiterate?

Beth Dichter's curator insight, February 13, 2013 11:16 PM

Approximately one in five Americans is illiterate, which is defined as lacking "the basic skills beyond a 4th grade level." This infographic explores this issue in some detail, beginning with definign the types of literacy as:

* Prose - reading news, stories, instructional materials

* Documents - forms such as job applications, maps, food labels

* Quantitave - balancing a checkbook, ordering items

From there it goes on to explore American's Literacy Levels (of which there are five). It probably will come as no surprise to learn that 50% of people at Level 1 (the most basic skills) live in poverty, but many other statistics are also found in this infographic. Additonal sections include a closer look at illiteracy, and the consequences of illiteracy.

This infographic makes me wonder how many of the children that we see struggling with literacy at school may have other family members who have similar issues.

Leaders, It Takes Courage To Talk About Safety | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

My last two articles Leaders Beware, Good People Bully Too and Unexpected Leadership Skills focused on how easy it is for managers, as I was, to bully their staff without even knowing that we are doing it.

It's always easier to spot bullying behavior in other managers."

EduGeek Journal » So I Guess The Future of Education Looks a Lot Like the Current and the Past

EduGeek Journal » So I Guess The Future of Education Looks a Lot Like the Current and the Past | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Maybe it is time to realize that the road to true revolution in academia is not about disruption or trying to recreate the “mp3 of the educational world” or even about revolution at all. Maybe it is about spending the time to train people correctly in how to use the correct tools in the correct way. Maybe it is time to stop making fun of the people that are calling for research into new ideas by saying that they are “resisting the inevitable future” (sometime research reveals that new ideas are good – so its not like people calling for research are resisting new ideas).  Because I am starting to think that the only inevitable thing about the future is that we will be doomed to repeat the past if we don’t learn from it. This whole scenario with Coursera seems to just be us repeating past mistakes because we didn’t try to learn from them along the way.

People make education, not things. People also make design. Changing design without changing the heart will not work. Mind you, design is a catalyst for change. But it's not nearly as powerful as really loving the people you are calling to change. For me, that's the essential and unmissable aspect of change theory that is lacking" a leadership group who holds to a vision but loves the people who are enduring it, especially those who object and are troublesome. They will be the real change agents of the future.

The New Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit

The New Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

By Tim Brown

"A few months ago education expert Sandy Speicher was kind enough to share her thoughts with me on the question: What's different when you look at the world of education through the lens of design?

"Today I’m proud to share the newly relaunched Design Thinking for Educators toolkit. This toolkit supports teachers in using design thinking tools to become agents of change in their classrooms, schools, and communities by designing more effective curriculum, spaces, tools, and systems. Created in partnership with educators, the toolkit includes real-world classroom experiences and an accompanying workbook to help teachers determine which challenges to address.

"Please share this free toolkit with educators in your network, and tell us: What’s your favorite tool in the new Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit?"

From the article: "Everyone is capable of being generous, at least once. Everyone is capable of being original, inspiring and connected, at least once. And everyone is capable of leading, yes, even more than once.

When those that we've chosen to teach and lead write off people because of what they look like or where they live or who their parents are, it's a tragedy. Worse, we often write people off merely because they've been brainwashed into thinking that they have no ability to do more than they've been assigned. Well, if we brainwashed them into setting limits, I know we can teach them to ignore those limits."

The Top 13 Grants Every Teacher Wants — and How to Get Them

The Top 13 Grants Every Teacher Wants — and How to Get Them | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

With states and local districts cutting back funding, many teachers must do more with less. Sometimes, a special project may need a little extra money to get started, and that’s where grants can be a lifesaver. There are hundreds of programs out there that offer teachers the chance to win funds for their classrooms, tech development, or for pioneering educational programs. Despite the wealth of options for this kind of funding, many teachers don’t know where to look for the best grants and how to successfully apply.

#FutureLeaders ~helping students lead positive change

#FutureLeaders is the first step in providing a generation of young people with a framework of leadership development tools that challenge the status quo in our society.

As you may know, our schools and workplace cultures are plagued by bullying, negative bias and disengagement.

Our goal is to and help students leverage the natural talents while learning how to use authority and popularity to help others and lead positive change in their schools, places of work and their families.
