Connectivism as a Digital Age Learning Theory

George Siemens and Stephen Downes developed a theory for the digital age, called connectivism, denouncing boundaries of behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. Their proposed learning theory has issued a debate over whether it is a learning theory or instructional theory or merely a pedagogical view.

This might be my new research topic. Very interesting.

Paige Paul's curator insight, September 15, 2015 7:52 PM

Topic 2- This is an interesting piece that explores how connectivism should be categorized.  Sometimes I think people in the education world can get too caught up in labels and buzzwords, and forget that ultimately what you call it doesn't matter as much as whether or not it promotes student learning.

Is STEM Critical To The Future Of Education? - Edudemic

Is STEM Critical To The Future Of Education? - Edudemic | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
What does the future of education actually look like? How does STEM fit in? An organization is attempting to answer these tough questions.

Amy Melendez's insight:

From the article:

Added to science, technology, engineering and math skills, also known as STEM, stakeholders have identified as critical to a successful graduate the ability to effectively manage time and risk, as well as social-emotional competencies that include perseverance and a sense of whether or not they identify as being “good” at math or as a scientist. Some students do not self-identify as having strong STEM skills. So they opt out early. By targeting math and science teachers for professional development in project-based learning and other approaches to engaging a diverse set of students, the CLF and others hope to reverse that trend.

We think by focusing on the one stream of education this will help children in the future? I am not convinced. We need a solid trans-disciplinary approach that incorpates all the key learnings in Math, Science, Language, Aesthetics, Phys Ed, and Social Studies.

The Significance of Grit (Resilience): Angela Lee Duckworth

The Significance of Grit (Resilience): Angela Lee Duckworth | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

What all those definitions of resilience have in common is the idea of a positive response to failure or adversity. Grit is related because part of what it means to be gritty is to be resilient in the face of failure or adversity. But that's not the only trait you need to be gritty.

"Carol Dweck, more than anyone else, is a role model for me. We're collaborating with her on a couple of projects. One thing we've found is that children who have more of a growth mind-set tend to be grittier. The correlation isn't perfect, but this suggests to me that one of the things that makes you gritty is having a growth mind-set. The attitude "I can get better if I try harder" should help make you a tenacious, determined, hard-working person." - Angela Duckworth

Don Cloud's curator insight, September 11, 2013 7:27 AM

"Grit" ... a key to being successful ... and it's something that you can develop in yourself and promote throughout your organization.
