If you're interested in the concept of learning games, this is a great list of some already out there.  Some are healthcare related, such as Pandemic 2 with a created virus or bacteria leading to a worldwide pandemic and Profit Seed dealing with genetics. There are quite a few social activism games such as Ayiti: The Cost of Life dealing with poverty in Haiti and Fatworld on nutrition.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, December 25, 2013 10:39 AM

The green games (environmental games) featured on ecogamer.org have been designed and created by developers. You may wish to visit the websites of the featured games to obtain additional information.

This is a cool teaching concept for kids to learn more about computing--both from the hardware and software perspectives. The idea was to create something that could be fun like a toy, but a teachable object.

If someone wants to get one of these for me for Christmas, it would make me happy! I wish we had stuff like this when I was a kid. I'd probably share this with my son, since the site talks about using this in conjunction with Minecraft, which is something my son LOVES.

J. Mark Schwanz's curator insight, December 3, 2013 9:11 AM

They jury is still out on what schools of the future will consider core knowledge. What is certain is student-centered and relevant learning. More than a simple trend, personalized learning points to better student-teacher relationships and personal knowledge profiles. Technology can do a lot but dialogue and constructivism are here to stay.

Lia Goren's curator insight, January 2, 2014 9:42 PM

Una interesante entrevista a George Siemens. De qué se trata el conocimiento y como pensar de manera compleja el ámbito de lo educativo y el aprender.

Jeroen Boon's curator insight, January 12, 2014 2:34 PM

Connectivism is a learning theory for the digital age. Learning has changed over the last several decades. The theories of behaviourism, cognitivism, and constructivism provide an effect view of learning in many environments. They fall short, however, when learning moves into informal, networked, technology-enabled arena.

A/Prof Jon Willis's curator insight, November 25, 2013 6:46 PM

This appears to have precious little to do with MOOCS, but it talks about Twitter as a personal learning network, which is partly how we tried to use it in ABTS1000 last year. Getting students to network - whether through the LMS, through Facebook, or through Twitter or some other online tool - seems to be a key challenge to developing this connectivist approach as part of routine teaching and learning. Interested in any ideas people have about ways to inspire student networking ...

Moodle.org: Moodle 2.6 is now available!

This release contains hundreds of improvements and fixes that address requests from the community, but the major ones fall into two basic categories: usability improvements that improve how Moodle functions from a user point of view and performance improvements that allow Moodle to run faster and better in a wider range of software environments.

1. Usability improvements: improved responsive behaviour for all types of devices, clean new course editing interfaces, annotation of PDF assignment submissions, improved course management, a more user-friendly text editor, additional name fields, a new course format that lets you make a course out of any single activity, support for non-Gregorian calendars and much more.

2. Performance improvements: new options for handling sessions using backends like memcached, full support for PHP OPcache, faster admin menus, improvements on MS SQL and Maria DB and more.

Have Students Generate Content to Improve Learning

Have Students Generate Content to Improve Learning | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
Online instructors face the challenges of keeping a course up to date, engaging students, and maintaining integrity. Having students generate some of the course content can address all three of these challenges.

Student-generated quiz questions
One way to have students generate content is to have them take part in the creation of assessments by writing quiz questions. This is a technique that Wilson and his colleague Toni Burkhalter, associate professor of biology and kinesiology, use in their online courses.

Having students write quiz questions can increase the course’s bank of questions, which decreases the likelihood of cheating. But beyond that, it can engage students in ways that improve the learning experience.

" Rocket Science 101 is a free iPad app offered by NASA. The app is designed to help students understand how rockets work and understand the differences between the four types of rockets most frequently used by NASA. In Rocket Science 101 students can build all four rockets in a jigsaw-like activity then virtually launch their rockets. When the rockets are launched students see the timing of each stage of the launch from surface to orbit."
