Why Digital Learning is Here to Stay

Why Digital Learning is Here to Stay | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Digital learning is coming whether people like it or not. The new standards call for it. Twenty-first century readiness requires it. Future jobs rely on it. There is no doubt that educational technology has the power to motivate kids, so why not harness that passion in the K-12 classroom? There are many reasons why digital learning has arrived and is here to stay.

Definitely should be part of learning, but not ALL the learning. Digital skills are like all other skills - tools. The CONTENT is what is really important! Too much focus is often on the tools being used, rather than what they are supposed to be teaching.....

What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers? - TeachThought | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

You know the content, you understand pedagogy, and you can navigate the minefield of diplomacy when dealing with parents, students, administrators, literacy coaches, and the local news station when they want to see the iPads glow on the students faces.

You know how to manage and coddle, inspire and organize, assess and deliver content.

But the technology is different. That part you do okay with, but, truth be told, the students are geniuses with technology. Born hackers. And of course they are, you tell yourself. They're digital natives.

I think, to some extent, this sometimes overstated. There are students who won''t  listen for a variety of reasons. That has always been the case. I found that most students are willing to learn. I am sitting in a university library with some digital natives. Most of them are here to learn and it shows.

'"In the realm of ideas everything depends on enthusiasm… in the real world all rests on perseverance.”

Goethe

Leadership goes beyond personal courage to inspiring courage in others.

Inspiring courage:

Acknowledge the fears of others...Elevate courage by acknowledging your own fears......Courage transforms fear into preparation...Focus on purpose. ...Facing uncertainty without purpose makes chickens of us all.

The surprising side of courageous leadership is finding the courage to let others lead.'

Everything you ever wanted to know about PLE (Personal Learning Environment) frameworks. Imagine if every school provide time for teachers and admin to develop a PLE as their own personal, individualized PD statement. I've included this in the Edu-Vision collection at my site http://teachlearnlead.weebly.com/ although I also could categorize this particular PLE presentation under the Linking Literacy category. Excellent piece!

Demand for Computer Science Classes Grows, Along With Digital Divide | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
It's estimated that only about 10 percent of K-12 schools teach computer science. Some companies are trying to fill a void in American public education by teaching kids computer programming basics. The push comes amid projections that there will be far more tech sector jobs than computer science graduates to fill them.

Breaking Bad Leadership Habits

Breaking Bad Leadership Habits | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Leaders have to learn and practice new management techniques to overcome the habits that could be holding them back. In two articles, I examine the obstacles, and later, the factors that can help senior executives overcome them.

We have known for a long time that leaders need to continue to learn throughout their careers. About 50 years ago, U.S. President John F. Kennedy, argued that “leadership and learning are indispensable to each other”.  And about 40 years ago, Alvin Toffler became famous by saying that tomorrow's illiterate will not be the one who can't read; he or she will be the one who has not learned how to learn.

This has become ever truer in the VUCA world. This Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous environment, characterised by an ever increasing rate of knowledge creation and change, increasingly demanding investors, employees, publics and regulators  who keep presenting leaders with new challenges that require new types of responses. In that world, “what got (leaders) here may not get them there”, as Marshall Goldsmith put it a few years ago. In fact, increasingly, what got them here may not even help them stay here.

27 Characteristics Of Authentic Assessment

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.
