Poor technology leadership is usually just poor leadership | Dangerously Irrelevant | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

When a school leader neglects to allocate sufficient professional development time for newly-purchased classroom technologies, that’s not poor technology leadership, that’s just poor leadership.

When a school leader doesn’t provide adequate technical support personnel for a new 1:1 laptop initiative, that’s not poor technology leadership, that’s just poor leadership.

When a school leader purchases system-wide learning software with little thought given to long-term financial and instructional sustainability, that’s not poor technology leadership, that’s just poor leadership.

When a school leader fails to ensure adequate parent education and support before initiating expensive, organization-wide technology programs, that’s not poor technology leadership, that’s just poor leadership.

There are two intertwined definitions of education and only one is included here. Educare is leading students out of child. Educere is allowing students to gain control over their learning and realizing they have support when needed. We have eliminated the latter replacing it with the instrumental version called learning which is what School is about.

Have you ever Googled yourself ? Have you ever checked your virtual identity? Do you know that you leave a digital footprint every time you get online? Do you know that whatever you do online is accumulated into a digital dossier traceable by others ? These and several other similar questions are but the emerging tip of the sinking iceberg. One that is packed full of concerns related to issues of our online identity and privacy issues.

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

"We recently discovered the Bay Area’s Prospect Sierra School’s interesting learning model that prioritizes 6 ideas for learning in the 21st century. There is, of course, no single “best” way to pursue “21st century learning”–nor any learning at all for that matter. But seeing the way other inspired educators pursue the idea can teach each one of us a lot. In this model, we appreciate the inclusion of self-knowledge, as well as moving past the idea of content to true disciplinary knowledge–seeing knowledge in context and application."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 26, 2014 9:22 PM

This post shares another visual that provides one model of learning in the 21st century. Specifically, it prioritizes six ideas:

* Disciplinary Knowledge - "Build and apply content knowledge to think deeply and act as a practitioner of the discipline"

* Self-Knowledge - "Experiment and create, while embracing failure as an opportunity for growth in order to design new ideas and solutions."

* Innovation Creation - "Recognize one’s emotional, physical, and learning needs, strengths, and challenges to nurture personal growth and resilience"

* Collaboration - "Share knowledge and resources, building on a diversity of ideas and experiences to achieve group goals and interdependence"

* Responsibility - "Understand one’s impact and influence in a local and global community; cultivate compassion, and take positive action"

* Communication - "Express ideas effectively through varied means of presentation; understand one’s audiences, actively listen; and build connection"

Additional information on each of these six ideas is included in the post.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, June 27, 2014 1:08 PM

There is no single best way to learn which suggests teaching remains central in the process.

Empathy and Academic Success
The key to compassion is being predisposed to help -- and that can be learned.

There is an active school movement in character education and teaching ethics. But I don't think it's enough to have children just learn about ethical virtuosity, because

we need to embody our ethical beliefs by acting on them. This begins with empathy.

Amy Melendez's insight:

From the article:

Learning in general happens best in a warm, supportive atmosphere, in which there exists a feeling of safety, of being supported and cared about, of closeness and connection. In such a space children's brains more readily reach the state of optimal cognitive efficiency -- and of caring about others.

Such an atmosphere has particular importance for those children at most risk of going off track in their lives because of early experiences of deprivation, abuse, or neglect. Studies of such high-risk kids who have ended up thriving in their lives -- who are resilient -- find that usually the one person who turned their life around was a caring adult.

Principles of Learning

Principles of Learning | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

After working for twelve years as an elementary school teacher, an instructor in higher education, and a facilitator for professional development workshops, I felt comfortable with instructional design — until I started working on a massive open online course (MOOC) for HarvardX.

As part of the team that created the course Leaders of Learning with Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) professor Richard Elmore, I found my ideas about how to engage learners were challenged by the simple fact that I could not watch their reactions or gauge their responses in real time.

Eventually, I did see how some of the design parameters we use with our in-person classes do hold true in an online environment.

Great post and free e-book from leadership expert Karin Hurt from @LetsGrowLeaders.    I totally agree with Karen's views on Parenting and Leadership.  Here is just one example:

It’s interesting to see leaders who take their servant leadership philosophy seriously at work, but have a more hovering approach when it comes to their children. In an effort to protect and scaffold, they actually overlook natural opportunities for their children to emerge as leaders.

The best way to learn the piano is to practice.

The best way to learn to do a flip-turn is to get in the pool and get some water up your nose.

The best way to learn leadership is by leading.

Our children surprise us when we stop looking for perfection and see the leaders that they are becoming.
