Alice.org - An Educational Software that teaches students computer programming in a 3D environment.

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects.

"The best way to teach somebody something," Pausch explained, "is to have them think they're learning something else." With Alice, students concentrate on making movies and games, but they also are learning to program." - Randy Pausch http://www.cmu.edu/homepage/beyond/2008/summer/an-enduring-legacy.shtml

Teachers as Leaders, Coaches & Lifelong Mentors | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Do you remember your 5th grade teachers?  Would you say that any of your 5th grade teachers made a lifelong impression on your life?
Today’s guest is doing just that!

Amy Melendez's insight:

From the post: We can start the process of leadership coaching IN the classroom. All this takes is an intentional approach and tools that teachers can use to teach leadership as part of their curriculum!

Just like we coach our kids on the court, track or wrestling mat, we need to coach them on how to lead positive change and avoid the inferior behaviors that come so easily with aggression and unmanaged conflict.

The flipped classroom model is turning the education world on its head. (See what we did there?) Essentially, students listen to traditional lectures not in class, but in videos that they watch independently. In doing so, teachers can free up class time for more interactive learning activities.  So, why wouldn’t every teacher do so?

Learning #Spanish #online the flipped way: study the interactive learning materials individually, and then sign up for the one-on-one online session with your Spanish native teacher in Spain for guidance and evaluation. Available for children (+9), teenagers and adults.

Home schooling is not for everyone, but it is for some people and probably more people than we think it is for. School comes from a word meaning leisure and as I read this post that is the message that emerged. Too often, School is the opposite of leisure and that is where the problem lies.

Dewey proposed that school would be a community that was an extension of home and community. We can rarely make that argument today.

After a break Jackie Gerstein has returned with a new post that looks at self-regulation. What does Gersteing mean when she talks about self-regulation. She lists eight characteristics. Three are below.

* Uses metacognitive processes

* Regulates and controls emotional and cognitive processes

* Manages time for one’s own benefit

After providing the list of 8 characteristic she shares strategies to help students "build and expand their self-regulation skills. Providing students with "metacognitive reflective questions both pre and post activity to help students learn about self-regulation.

Self-regulation has three phases, and she shares a visual about the three phases as well as clear descriptions.

The post goes on to cover additional strategies and also has an excellent SlideShare on Teaching Children Self-Reguation.

At the end of the post she discusses self-regulation as a 21st century skill and learning activities for young people.

As always Gerstein's post are chock full of additional links. Educate yourself and teachers in your building by sharing this informative post.

Crafty Ways to Use Minecraft at School

Crafty Ways to Use Minecraft at School | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
Maybe your child is one of the thousands hooked on Minecraft, a video game that lets players build with textured cubes in a virtual 3D world. Players can also explore seemingly endless worlds and time periods, gather resources, craft, and engage in combat. What you may not be aware of is the inherent educational potential of the game. Common Sense Media describes Minecraft as “an open-ended, exploration and creation focused environment…Players can create items and buildings from scratch using materials they harvest from the world around them…Kids can learn creative thinking, geometry, and even a little geology as they build imaginative block structures in this refreshingly open-ended mining and construction game.”
Third grade teacher Jennifer Bond discovered the educational value of the popular video game almost by accident. Speaking at the 2013 STEMx Education Conference, she said it was her students who introduced her to the game during one of the designated BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) days in her classroom. “I discovered how well the game helps kids connect technology to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum. It’s a lot like virtual Lego building.”

How to be a successful freelance virtual Instructional Designer (part 1)

How to be a successful freelance virtual Instructional Designer (part 1) | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Being a successful freelance virtual instructional designer is not just setting up your home office. Get these valuable insights to be an ID in demand!

Many of us are now embracing the virtual lifestyle in our careers. And we’re finding there are great benefits. Without a long commute, we find more time for a better work-life balance, so we can spend more time with friends and family and explore our hobbies. We also put less wear and tear on cars, while doing a small part to protect the environment.

That said, being a successful freelance virtual instructional designer is not as easy as setting up a computer in your home office. I have worked as an instructional designer (ID) both in an in-house office environment and as a freelancer working virtually. I have also interviewed and managed many virtual ID freelancers in my role at SweetRush. I have lived through and understand all too well the differences in the two environments, and how being a successful freelancer takes a special mindset. In-house, you are an employee; to be a successful freelancer, you need an entrepreneurial mindset (or at least demonstrate some entrepreneurial behaviors).

In this two-part series, I will share insights on what I look for when interviewing potential IDs for our engagements and some tips that kept me consistently busy when I was a freelancer—even during some lean years when it was challenging, and so many of my peers struggled to find work. Here in part 1, I’ll cover landing projects, and part 2 will focus on behaviors to exhibit once you get assigned to a project team.

From Math Survival Guide:

"Then, one summer, I realized that I couldn’t change the students…  I had to change myself!  I had to shake things up and teach in a completely different way.  I had to be the one to set the tone for success.  So, I read a bunch of books on success and how to motivate people.

The next semester, I didn’t walk into my classes as a math teacher…  I walked in as a motivational speaker!  I didn’t talk about math the first day…  I talked about SUCCESS!

From that day on, I also started each one of my classes with a great

motivational quote to get everyone in a positive frame of mind." - coolmath.com

Online students (and teachers) go to school 'in a computer'. Gaining technology skills is part of the double loop effect of online classes. You learn the curriculum and you begin to master the communications technology that allows you to be present with your students.

We don't expect the graduate students in the E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate to be technical wizards. We do encourage independent learning and the confident attitude that "I can learn this."

One service we provide to students is 24/7 access to the superb video based online self-paced courses provided by Lynda.com.  This is available to all UW-Stout students currently registered for a class.

Our online classes begin mid September. Now is a good time to brush up on your software skills!
