9 Characteristics Of 21st Century Learning - A Different View

9 Characteristics Of 21st Century Learning - A Different View | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

What does it mean when you say 21st century learning? This post lists nine characteristics of 21st century learning and provides a rationale. What makes this notable is "the absence of technology. There is very little about iPads, social media, 1:10 laptops, or other tech-implementation. In that way, it is closer to the 'classic' approach to 'good learning' than it is the full-on digital fare we often explore."

The nine characteristics are in the diagram above and listed below:

Learner-centered, Media-driven, Personalized, Tranfer-by-Design, Visibly Relevant, Data-Rich, Adaptable, Interdependent and Diverse.

Do you remember your 5th grade teachers?  Would you say that any of your 5th grade teachers made a lifelong impression on your life?
Today’s guest is doing just that!

Amy Melendez's insight:

From the post: We can start the process of leadership coaching IN the classroom. All this takes is an intentional approach and tools that teachers can use to teach leadership as part of their curriculum!

Just like we coach our kids on the court, track or wrestling mat, we need to coach them on how to lead positive change and avoid the inferior behaviors that come so easily with aggression and unmanaged conflict.

15 Things we do as educators today that will embarrass us in 20 years | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

In an era of such rapid change, it’s no easy task to predict the future. The practices and principles we hold dearest to our hearts now may very well be the ones we’re trashing in 25 years. In the same breath, the trends we find least appealing may end up boasting mainstream success. Let’s take a look at 15 beliefs and practices that illustrate our point.

When You Say #GeniusHour "Isn't Enough"...You're Missing the Point - A.J. Juliani

When You Say #GeniusHour "Isn't Enough"...You're Missing the Point - A.J. Juliani | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

As I mentioned in my article, “The Research Behind 20% Time“ http://ajjuliani.com/the-research-behind-20-time/ , there is a lot of support for this type of inquiry-based learning in schools. However, I want to point out a few important pieces of information in this post on why many of the folks talking about the demise of Google’s 20% time and whether or not Genius Hour is enough…are simply missing the point.

25 Practices That Foster Lifelong Learning - InformED | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

"Is your capacity for learning is fixed or fluid? Can you improve your intelligence and talents through hard work and practice, or are you stuck with the brains you’ve got? Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck says most of us have either a “fixed” or “growth” mindset when it comes to learning. Most of us can get through sixteen years of schooling regardless of which mindset we have, but when it comes to lifelong learning–learning for the sake of learning, without outside pressure–only a growth mindset will cut it."

8 reasons why Experiential Learning is the future of learning

8 reasons why Experiential Learning is the future of learning | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
More than a hundred years ago, Hermann Ebbinghaus formulated the learning curve, which describes the relationship between memory and time. In a nutshell, it says that, during a lecture, if your absorption rate is at 100 percent on day one, there is a 50-80 percent loss of learning from the second day onward, which is reduced to a retention rate of just 2-3 percent at the end of thirty days.

This theory is even more relevant in today's world where attention spans have come down and learning sometimes is reduced to 140 characters!

"I brought a superhero into my classroom the other day. He wasn't wearing a cape. He didn't have an alias. But he had the greatest superpower of all: inspiration.

When you teach using project-based learning (PBL), one brings outside expertise into the classroom. My eighth graders begin the year creating science fiction based origin stories for original superhero characters as an introduction to a greater advocacy unit. Therefore, it seemed natural to bring in an actual scientist. Which brought me to CalTech and Dr. Spyridon Michalakis."
