Do you remember your 5th grade teachers?  Would you say that any of your 5th grade teachers made a lifelong impression on your life?
Today’s guest is doing just that!

Amy Melendez's insight:

From the post: We can start the process of leadership coaching IN the classroom. All this takes is an intentional approach and tools that teachers can use to teach leadership as part of their curriculum!

Just like we coach our kids on the court, track or wrestling mat, we need to coach them on how to lead positive change and avoid the inferior behaviors that come so easily with aggression and unmanaged conflict.

Can You Use that Photo? Understanding Fair Use and What Photos Can and Can’t Be Used Legally on Your Blog

Can You Use that Photo? Understanding Fair Use and What Photos Can and Can’t Be Used Legally on Your Blog | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
According to MDG Advertising, 37% of Facebook users engage more fully with a post that has a photo included; and 67% of customers state that the quality of a product’s image helps them decide whether or not to purchase the product.

One of the reasons that sites like Pinterest have become so popular is that people find the images engaging. You’ve probably heard it said that a picture is “worth 1000 words”. This is true because humans are visually driven.

Nine things educators need to know about the brain

Nine things educators need to know about the brain | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

It was shaped over millions of years of sequential adaptation in response to ever-changing environmental demands. Over time, brains grew in size and complexity; old structures were conserved and new structures emerged. As we evolved into social beings, our brains became incredibly sensitive to our social worlds.

This mixture of conservation, adaptation, and innovation has resulted in an amazingly complex brain, capable of everything from monitoring respiration to creating culture. This added complexity came with a cost. Not only do all of these systems have to develop and interconnect, but they also have to stay balanced and properly integrated for optimal performance.

This evolutionary history poses a challenge for educators. While findings from social neuroscience can provide some welcome guideposts for teachers, they cannot substitute for the flexibility needed in the classroom to accommodate a range of students. Students and teachers are not uniform raw materials or assembly-line workers, but a diverse collection of living, breathing human beings with complex evolutionary histories, cultural backgrounds, and life stories.

If we are going to move forward, we will have to admit that a one-size-fits-all model of education is doomed to fail the majority of students and teachers.

And through understanding how students’ brains actually work and using that knowledge to benefit classroom learning, we may be able to positively influence classroom education and prepare students to better face unknowable futures. Here are nine scientific insights that educators might want to keep in mind.

Suvi Salo's curator insight, January 4, 3:07 AM

”1.The brain is a social organ.

2. We have two brains.

3. Early learning is powerful.

4. Conscious awareness and unconscious processing occur at different speeds, often simultaneously.

5. The mind, brain, and body are interwoven.

6. The brain has a short attention span and needs repetition and multiple-channel processing for deeper learning to occur.

7. Fear and stress impair learning.

8. We analyze others but not ourselves: the primacy of projection.

9. Learning is enhanced by emphasizing the big picture—and then allowing students to discover the details for themselves.”

Digital Citizenship Is As Important As Potty Training: Let's Start Cyber Civics Classes In All Schools

Digital Citizenship Is As Important As Potty Training: Let's Start Cyber Civics Classes In All Schools | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

As part of our holiday series “One Change I’d Like to See in 2015″ Sue Scheff challenges us to make Cyber Citizenship a priority in schools.

We live in a digital age where this is a fact: Your virtual resume determines your future. Studies indicate that a student’s GPA may not be good enough for college recruiters if their social media behavior is out of line. A Career Builders survey shows that 51% of employers did not hire an applicant due to negative social media behavior and online content.

Since cyber-life is imperative to a child’s future, isn’t it about time to demand that schools implement Cyber Civics classes?

A Moodlemas Carol: resources for past, present and future

A Moodlemas Carol: resources for past, present and future | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

I’ll be taking an unofficial holiday break until the new year starting this week. While I don’t have planned posts I just might get a few out when I find something truly too good not to share (as often Moodle-related news is). In any event, so as to not leave you with nothing to read or brush up on that’s somewhat connected to my favorite LMS, here are some resources to invest your time over the holiday break provided with Dickensian theme.

* A few years ago I published 12 days of Moodlemas (from which the title of this post is borrowed) which includes a host of links, resources, books and more shared across the community. While things have changed a lot since the original publishing there are always worthwhile resources in the archives: relive something from Christmas Past with the 12 days of Moodlemas

* For Moodlemas Present let’s turn to the latest Moodle release, 2.8 and all of the amazing features that it’s brought to the community. 2.8 brought major changes to the Gradebook, user interface, fun tricks with email (like replying to forums and uploading docs to private files), and loads more. Moodle HQ has done a brilliant job of highlighting the features via video and documentation. Check out the videos for 2.8 here.

* Finally for Moodlemas future. It’s certainly bright with Moodle 2.9 and 3.0 due out in 2015 and at the very beginning of the year anyone can join in and become a Moodler by signing up for the LearnMoodle MOOC (part 2) which starts in January. There are loads of Moodlemoots to attend as well so add some Moodle to your future by following along or getting involved.
