Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery

Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

Ten Disciplines of a Learner
We decided to continue the conversation on this topic at a faculty meeting. Several meetings later we had a new report card. We decided to give two grades and average them—one for “Learning,” the other for “Mastery.”

Sara might get an “F” in mastery and an “A” in learning, culminating in a “C” for the course. To be rigorous we picked ten observable behaviors and named them “Disciplines of a Learner:”

1.     Asks questions

2.     Builds on other people’s ideas

3.     Uses mistakes as learning opportunities

4.     Takes criticism constructively

5.     Speaks up

6.     Welcomes a challenge

7.     Takes risks

8.     Listens with an openness to change

9.     Perseveres in tasks

10.   Decides when to lead and when to follow.

Like the questions.

Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, March 22, 2:07 PM

Whether in school or the work place, we talk about measurable goals and objectives but most of us struggle to define how those goals or objectives might be measured. Now that's often because the goals and objectives aren't actually measurable, but it's mostly because we don't think through what we're actually asking students or employees to accomplish.  For students, success and progress can be measured when they see "that [their] learning, not [their] intelligence" matters. For  employees, success and progress can be measured in much the same way.

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
Project-based learning may be the best vehicle for personalized learning as teachers move beyond "course-based" approaches and open the way for student-designed curriculum.

Not every teacher may be ready to jump into this type of personalization. To make it work, they'll be required to adopt a different teaching role. They'll need strong management skills and a commitment to disruptive innovation. In addition, the current constructs of the education system may hold us back. What if we could make this dream of personalized PBL a reality?

===> I say that we work toward it, creating a push on the system that demands change in the education of our students. <===

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, August 21, 2014 9:13 PM

An art teacher and I (drama teacher) started to use a negotiated approach with students about 15 years ago.  By working with students to be aware of curriculum expectations and discussing "what would this look like" we assisted students with developingntheir own learnign pathways and expressions of their learning - in keeping with the legislated requirements of curriculum.  I've also noted over the years that elements of the International Baccalaureate - particularly the project work from MYP - reflects a similar approach.

Without reference to research literature, I'd speculate that this speaks to engagement, authenticity and relevance... and needn't be confined to K-12 contexts.... well-documented project work could be conducted outside the confines of formal classes and evidenced against formal assessment criteria.

Durriyyah Kemp's curator insight, August 22, 2014 11:10 AM

Project-Based Learning is a great vehicle for allowing student to gain social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.  The five core competency skills for SEL (self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management) can be easily integrated into any project-based learning opportunity.

And curating content can raise your brand awareness and bring more visitors to your website. So how do these two fundamental marketing pieces work together? Very nicely. In terms of content marketing in any industry, how you marry creation and curation could mean your success or failure.

Specifically in education, EdTech consultants, teachers and librarians are doing a great job combining creation and curation to showcase student creativity, school information and thought leadership. We've pulled four worthy examples of users in the EdTech space who exemplify using powerful online tools to master creation and curation consistently. Continue reading →

Digital Citizenship Is As Important As Potty Training: Let's Start Cyber Civics Classes In All Schools | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it

As part of our holiday series “One Change I’d Like to See in 2015″ Sue Scheff challenges us to make Cyber Citizenship a priority in schools.

We live in a digital age where this is a fact: Your virtual resume determines your future. Studies indicate that a student’s GPA may not be good enough for college recruiters if their social media behavior is out of line. A Career Builders survey shows that 51% of employers did not hire an applicant due to negative social media behavior and online content.

Since cyber-life is imperative to a child’s future, isn’t it about time to demand that schools implement Cyber Civics classes?

Integrity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Integrity

Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. Barbara Killinger offers a traditional definition: Integrity is a personal choice, an uncompromising and predictably consistent commitment to honour moral, ethical, spiritual and artistic values and principles.
