End of School Roundup: Using Creation & Curation in Education

End of School Roundup: Using Creation & Curation in Education | Digital Learning, Technology, Education | Scoop.it
According to the Content Marketing Institute, original content should be the cornerstone of your content marketing. And curating content can raise your brand awareness and bring more visitors to your website. So how do these two fundamental marketing pieces work together? Very nicely. In terms of content marketing in any industry, how you marry creation and curation could mean your success or failure.

Specifically in education, EdTech consultants, teachers and librarians are doing a great job combining creation and curation to showcase student creativity, school information and thought leadership. We've pulled four worthy examples of users in the EdTech space who exemplify using powerful online tools to master creation and curation consistently. Continue reading →

I'm in my office tapping away on my computer, and can hear sounds coming from the other side of the door: clinks from my husband washing dinner dishes, and chirps from my son Leo's iPad as he happily entertains himself.

"Happily entertains himself" is not a phrase I use casually. While Leo is absolutely one of the happiest kids you'll ever meet, he is also autistic, and does best with 24/7 supervision and support. So for him to independently busy himself with that iPad is ... kind of a big deal. iPads are kind of a big deal for many kids with special needs.

As we all know from financial investing, if we put our money into an account that has an interest rate of zero, then we are basically going to remain in a holding pattern.  No loss (if we don’t count inflation) but also no growth!  Not good.

To relate this with language learning: If we just repeat the same words over and over again in the same sentences and in the same contexts for weeks at a time, then our interest rate is going to remain stagnant.  Using the words we have learned in new sentences, with new people, in different settings is key.  Listening to audio programs, watching videos and taking notes, this will keep the ball rolling.

Getting excited about the culture is also key: making recipes from the culture, learning about the countries where the language is spoken, visiting cultural events in your community are all part of the process.

Putting all of this together is how our language will expand each day and each week.  It is how we ensure that our interest rate remains high.

The important lesson with managing your digital footprint is that

Blogging is very suitable for homeschool moms because it offers great flexibility, it can be born out of a passion for a particular niche and many homeschool moms just enjoy writing. Though mommy blogging can turn out to be a viable source of discretionary  income (or more), it takes more than throwing up a blog and posting some content every once in a while.  It takes motivation and perseverance to grow your blog and be successful. It also takes a certain level of quality content which may mean you need a willingness on your part to seek self-improvement and maybe even seek outside advice.

In this post Jackie Gerstein provides a great list of books that you could use to teach children about the skills and attributes that they need to learn. She states " Children’s books, as they are written and presented as stories, have great potential to explain these often abstract concepts.  There is also evidence that the brain processes stories differently and more powerfully than facts and lectures."

The stories are divided into sections:

* Grit

* Resilience

* Hope & Optimism

* Vision

* Self-Regulation

* Empathy & Global Awareness

There is also a list of books suggested by Tony Wagner in the areas of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Curiosity and Imagination.

Although geared to children some are appropriate for older students.
