Pindara Hospital Doctors Move Like Jagger

Pindara Hospital Doctors Move Like Jagger | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Group of Medical Specialists doing a choreographed film clip
Morgan Swann's insight:

Either Australia's inhabitants are really healthy or these Doctors are doing a terrible job at their.. well.. job. This video has already hit 100,000 views and it hasn't even been online for a week! The editing and quality is surprisingly good, but they are doctors so they can afford the good stuff. This video is fun and almost makes me enjoy Maroon 5's "Moves like Jagger."

It's uplifting to see a work field that is often percieved to be uptight or serious let loose and enjoy themselves. If there is anything that can tie together different cultures and those of different languages, other than food (can't forget food), it's dance because it is the universal language. Dance brings people together.

Not to mention, this video was made for their Christmas celebrations! These folks spend a huge chunk of their time together and can sometimes feel like family members. This video is entertaining to me, but I can only imagine the room full of laughter and joy to see their friends and colleagues on the big screen acting a dang fool. Good times. Good Times.

Morgan Swann's insight:

Can't read that? Don't worry. There is no translation needed for this video. This video has over 1 million views and climbing. German Shepherds may be scary, but I think they've figured out a way to tame their wild nature. I wonder if this works on other animals.. or even humans? That would definitely be a game changer during any argument. I can see this being parodied already!

One Man Dances Like Nobody's Watching While Everyone Is He'll Crack You Up! Comedy Videos

Morgan Swann's insight:

There is a new dance sensation roaming across YouTube known as "dance like nobody is watching" and I must admit that it is rather entertaining. The video beings normal enough, as it opens up with a few shots of various Celtic fans cheering for their team. Moments later the camera pans over to a man who clearly knows the lyrics to the song that is blasting throughout the stadium. This is where things get weird. He not only commences to the lip sing the song as it goes on, but he also develops a whole dance routine as he moves down the isle greeting stadium goers and families. The video carries on as this man literally continues to dance as if nobody was there. This throw caution to the wind attitude is another example of how web audiences wish they could participate in modern day life. There is something heartfelt and honest about dancing in public without worrying what others think, and this is a prime example of that.

Original Dance Factory Preschool Tap

BROADWAY BABY Written by Stephen Sondheim Herald Square Music Inc.
Morgan Swann's insight:

This video is now topping out at close to four million views and now I can see why. I am not one of those people who just melt over the cuteness of the Internet, but this video right here is something special. I adore how this one girl just does her own thing without a care in the world. To me that is really what being a kid is about, not to mention the child's overall star quality performance. This is a display of unabashed individuality and is often what would be considered to be disruptive within our society. After reflecting on this video for a moment, it would be considerable to ask ourselves what could we learn from this little girl? Comparatively this kid makes Shirley Temple seem like she had rocks in her shoes, and all the while she is reinventing dance as if it were jazz. Sometimes we can really learn a lot from the kids around us because as we get older our creative scope narrows down to our fear of how others will perceive us. I am sure in ten years from now this girl is going to look back on this video and say, "this is when I went viral."

Surprise Dance on Finnair Flight to celebrate India's Republic Day

Takeoff to Bollywood! A Dance Crew surprises passengers after boarding of a Finnair flight to Delhi to celebrate India's Republic Day on January 26th 2012.

Via Ulla M. Saikku
Morgan Swann's insight:

On a flight to India, flight attendants surprised passengers with a fun Bollywood dance to celebrate India's Republic Day in January.

The airline, Finnair, earned some serious props from much of India, helping them gain a more profitable business stance as the "fun" airline.

Once again, viral video marketing at its best. It is so important to note the power of the internet. With just this video, Finnair was able to put a postitive image of their company in viewers' minds. If I were flying to India, I would fly Finnair just becuase of this video.

'Gangnam Style' Is Officially The Biggest Thing To Ever Hit YouTube

'Gangnam Style' Is Officially The Biggest Thing To Ever Hit YouTube | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Korean pop star Psy, who horse-danced his way to Internet fame with his viral hit song "Gangnam Style," now officially owns the most-watched video in the history of YouTube.

Via Xposedbydesign
Morgan Swann's insight:

It's official, Psy's "Gangnam Style" is the most viewed video on YouTube EVER. He even beat Justin Bieber. With nearly one BILLION views, this viral video will go down in history. It is amazing to me that this video was as popular as it was... but this is America. I wonder how many views this video got in Korea.

There have been numerous parodies of the "Gangnam Style" sprawled all over the internet, giving this video royal status as one of the most popular videos of the 21st Century.

"Roar" Burlesque Tap Dance - Katy Perry (PRISM)

*Please visit this link to view the video via mobile device, or if you cannot sign into YouTube: http://amandatrustysays.com/2013/11/10/roar/ Amanda Trusty (...
Morgan Swann's insight:

This video has been floating around the interwebs recently so I thought I would take a moment to discuss what is going on here. First of all, I really adore the message going on in the video because in today's world of self-image, women and men are finding themselves more and more inadequate when compared to the media standards. Amanda Trusty's reaction to our society's views on what is beauty is a great representation and celebration of the human form. She is a burlesque dancer to begin with, which would imply that in no way she is afraid to show some skin. Taking things one-step further, she has messages taped across he body ranging from phrases such as "fat" (pointing to her butt) to cellulite. During the routine she commences to peel away the stigmas brought upon her through her dance routine. The over-all content of this video is healthy and uplifting. Though I can't help but wonder if a Katy Perry song is really the best way to convey such a message. Nevertheless, this video is inspiring to some and in ways Amanda could never have conceived without the use of social media.

Epic Massive Harlem Shake (Original Copilation) Dance Viral

Harlem Shake Copilation, Best Harlem Shake videos. Music: Baauer - Harlem Shake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk1_DbbzSdY Purchase on Itunes: http://bit.ly/...
Morgan Swann's insight:

The Harlem Shake has become quite the Internet phenomenon for sometime now. Not only is it a well known song, but it has also meshed into a the separate sensation known as "flash mobs." These flash mobs are brought about by organizing a mass group of people in a public setting to intentionally go about preforming one task. This combination of popular music with organized dance exemplifies the organizational power of social media. Without social media it would be near impossible to for an individual to find out to where to be at a specific place at a specific time to do a specific thing. The volume alone to this crowd is astonishing, and truly visualizes the power of viral media in today's contemporary society.

CTV BC: Boy’s Britney dance goes viral

CTV BC: Boy’s Britney dance goes viral | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
In today's What's Trending, Mike Shaeffer from 103.5 QMFM shows us an embarrassing – yet hilarious – dance that was caught on camera. (Boy's Britney Spears dance goes viral.
Morgan Swann's insight:

You'll have to watch the first story in the newscast to get to the hilariously funny video of a little boy dancing to Britney Spears.

As I mentioned earlier, or what I would like to examine is, what made this video viral? What was its "it-factor".

Here are some of my observations.

1. It's funny.

2. Whoever is filming this is hiding in the closet and because of this, the young dancer grooves uninhibitedly, adding to the funny factor.

3. Young boy dancing to Britney Spears-- anybody dancing this intensely to Britney Spears is funny.

So, those are my reasons. I think some who will watch this will wonder how it climbed to viral success  but I say anything that displays an embarassing, yet funny moment is bound to set viral video records.

Evolution of Dance - By Judson Laipply

For more visit http://www.mightaswelldance.com
Morgan Swann's insight:

This may be one of the most popular instances of viral dance that is on the Internet. With over two hundred million views, Judson Laipply has ascended YouTube fame by uploading the ever-popular video "Evolution of Dance" in 2006. This all-encompassing dance routine seamlessly conveys the evolution of dance beginning with the fifties, down to the modern moves seen today. What really makes this video unique is that it was brought about in a time where "going viral" was not an intended goal for most video uploaders. This unintentional viral dance video is an anomaly to the current concepts of viral dance in that it repurposes classic dance styles with a modern concept.

Or get down with the Gangnam? Whether it's a golden oldie or modern masterpiece Manchester is looking for an iconic dance tune to see in the New Year.
Morgan Swann's insight:

This is interesting.

This year Manchester Matters is asking their readers to vote on a dance to be performed this New Years. Last year it was Psy's Gangnam style.

This year? Who knows? Beyonce's Single Ladies, The Macarena..the options are endless.

We we do know is, viral dance is taking over. It's clearly a good way to bring people together, keep people entertained and set some world records.

It's also a great way to keep budding artists thinking and making fun, songs/ dances that may one day go viral.

Here's a short video of the festivitites from last year:

Logo TV's Twerking Turkey Will Give You Thanksgiving Nightmares - Adweek

Logo TV's Twerking Turkey Will Give You Thanksgiving Nightmares - Adweek | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Adweek Logo TV's Twerking Turkey Will Give You Thanksgiving Nightmares Adweek Logo TV reminds its "savvy audience of gay trendsetters and straight friends who are ahead of the curve" to twerk their turkeys this Thanksgiving, but not with stuffing...
Morgan Swann's insight:

Twerk your turkey??

This is Logo TV's latest ad, made just in time for Thanksgiving. Pretty disturbing and strange/disgusting to see a turkey twerking...but this is just another example of how the twerking dance movement, something that was super viral and pervasive, aids in this advertisment  being viral as well.

In case you didn't hear, Miley's semi-nude twerking butt at the MTV VMA's was actually compared to the backend of a turkey.

Here's the article:

http://www.thelmagazine.com/TheMeasure/archives/2013/08/26/lets-maybe-not-compare-miley-cyrus-ass-to-a-turkey

Not nice but... she did it.

I'm not sure who'd want to eat turkey after watching this (not me, I'm a vegetarian).

I think the worst part and the most intriguing is the theme song for this video is so catchy that people will most likely make  a video response or just have the disturbing image and song stuck in their heads for a while.

So, who's going to twerk their turkey this Thanksgiving?

Regardless, have a happy one!

There's a thing called finger break dancing, and here it is

There's a thing called finger break dancing, and here it is | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Red Bull held its annual break-dancing competition on Friday, and this year there was a new category to compete in: fingerbreaking. Yes, that would be finger — and occasionally the whole hand — break dancing.
Morgan Swann's insight:

Finger break dancing? Yup. It's a thing. This year's Red Bull created a new category to support.. this thing. Watching the video is somewhat delightful and what's great is that the hand belongs to a woman! Not only do we have a female busting out her moves, this type of dance has created the need for mini Adidas, track jackets, and all the 80's break dancing attire that would make Run DMC proud.  So yes, the miniature items bring me back to being a young girl with dollhouses filled with tiny furniture and that warms my heart, but I don't see finger break dancing lasting too much longer and watching it once was more than enough.

Evolution of End Zone Dancing (w/ Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake)

Jimmy and Justin Timberlake dance through the history of touchdown celebrations. Subscribe NOW to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: http://full.sc/IcjtXJ Watch L...
Morgan Swann's insight:

Since the NFL's choice decision to make victory dances a penalty, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake put together a joint routine to parody the situation. Referencing one of my earlier posts on this blog, Jimmy and Justin take the viral video known as "The Evolution of Dance" and repurpose it towards the timely removal of dancing in the NFL. With those elements in mind, there comes this comical video of two grown men dancing obscenely to a cheering crowd. What starts and seems like some nonsensical dancing shortly mutates into a staged theater routine that I certainly did not expect. Meaning that before this episode had aired, both Jimmy and Justin must have practiced this routine before a public audience. In that essence it is not necessarily what I would consider to be a viral video, though once it is released on the Internet to the public it becomes subjected to the audiences' own devices. By taking a popular viral video and repurposing it's composition to make a comment on a current topic is a great use and example of today's media culture.

What Twerking Means To Marketers

What Twerking Means To Marketers | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Pop culture has a weird way of unearthing things that are unknown and exploiting them to the point of staleness. We saw it happen this summer with The Harlem Shake.

Via Thomas Faltin
Morgan Swann's insight:

"By exploring the history of a viral theme within the context of marketing, a brand stands to make a deeper connection to consumer attitudes, tastes, and buying behaviors, thus positioning itself to make a real contribution to the discussion without looking foolish. "

Twerking is now a way to connect the consumer and your brand. Popular culture has gained a strong precedence within the marketing world. More and more companies are signaling out a younger demographic and the only way to connect with these young people is to reference a bit of pop culture. Thus, twerking, the harlem shake, and other viral video hits are functioning as a 'brand'  within the communites of young people. Marketers are taking note of this and are using their findings to hook the young demographic in.

Morgan Swann's insight:

My heart melted when I saw this video. This young, autistic child's video of her move-for-move replica of the Coppelia ballet will have you smiling. Based on my findings on what makes a video viral, this dance has some important characteristics:

1) She is a child with talent--Always an important feature of a viral video. If you have a young child prodigy, get them on YouTube now!

2) She has special needs, but defeats all sterotypes--Yes, she is autistic, but she can dance and she is  one smart cookie! The fact that she memorized that entire dance is amazing! I can barely memorize my address.

This is a good summation of why this video went viral.

Morgan Swann's insight:

This video has been around for some time now, but with over fifty million views it is still hard to ignore to even this day. What we have here is an example of a "flash mob" before there really was such things as the term "flash mob." Really what I mean by "flash mob" in this instance of this video is that there is a vast number of individuals’ participating in a singular dance routine. Although this video does escape some of the conventions of what is to be considered a "flash mob," this is a well-orchestrated example of a viral dance. In this case there are prison inmates from the Philippines using their yard time to indulge in some creative exercises. Delving into the abyss that is the YouTube comments section there are individuals who claim that this is not punishment. Though, I am here to state this may just be some cruel form of torture. Imagine having to rehearse this routine time and time again, till devoid of all emotion until the subject becomes the very zombie Jackson describes. At any rate, it does make for an entertaining video.

While this song was absolutely terrible, I'll admit, I know it by heart. It's silly and annoying but also extremely catchy, perfect for viral video success.

Everytime Friday rolls around, I catch myself singing this song so as embarassing it is for her, she did a good job creating a memorable tune.

Twerking: Degrading Or Liberating?

Twerking: Degrading Or Liberating? | Viral Dance | Scoop.it
Twerking has taken the world by storm with confused teenage girls trying to shed off their Disney image and ratchet rappers giving away college scholarships to the best 'twerker'. The word has even...
Morgan Swann's insight:

I am very happy I stumbled upon this article because it brings up two or more important points I touched on earlier in the semester.

1. Is twerking degrading or liberating?

Twerking is seen as not respectable and tasteless but one has to ask the question: Who exactly defines what is respectable and what isn’t?"

What a great question. In conversation, I hear a little bit of both; it's gross, it's unattractive, it's stupid or it's fun, who cares, and I've tried it.

Here's another important idea I touched on earlier.

2. Who created this dance?

"Twerking stems from booty dancing and booting dancing originated from Africa and spread through the African diaspora, from a dance called the Mapouka in the Ivory Coast to the Soukous in the Congo, across to dancehall dances in Jamaica."

With that being said, we see that twerking has been around for quite a while. We also see that it is culturally rooted, it is an "integral part of African culture."

So should it get some respect? The author brings up another interesting point.

"... booty dancing has been an integral part of African culture yet when black women decide to shake their God-given booties they are called out as hyper-sexualised and lascivious.Booty dancing doesn’t fit the white patriarchal constructs of decency and respectability that we’ve been forced to accept and so, when a black woman decides to shake her bum, she makes the society we live in uncomfortable and is described as depraved and crude. Yet when Disney’s Hannah Montana decided to twerk she was praised for her efforts no matter how ridiculous she looked doing it."

Miley gets street cred for twerking and appropriating this dance, meanwhile, people culturally and historically connected to the dance and criticized.

The little tot and her mom made another appearance on the Ellen show to discuss life with her new found fame from her viral video. ... The Best Halloween 2013 Celeb Costumes (PHOTOS) · Surprised? Sophia Grace & Rosie ...
Morgan Swann's insight:

Firstly, let me say, this is adorable.

Absolutely adorable. This little girl, 3-year-old Heaven, along with her mother who is dance instructor, have drawn in, to this date, 1,265,975 views for a dance they did to a Beyonce jam back in May 2013:

Here's the original video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ_Sk6k6UZc

Now, they're on Ellen.

Just amazing. Getting a lot of likes, hits and comments is pretty tricky but also pretty simple.  I believe there has to be one simple ingredient to viral video success.  The talent must  have an it-factor; that indefinable something that makes them special, different, zany, etc.

That factor has to make people want to talk and share. The fact that Heaven is only  three, (she was two when she made her first video) is what makes this really cool, unique and  perfect for on-the way-to record-setting-viral-video-success.

So, I'm arguing that her age was vital in the success of this her video going viral.

I wonder, if she was about 10 years old, or maybe even a teen, if her dancing video would've had the same impact.

Ylvis performs 'The Fox' on 'Dancing With the Stars Finale' (video) Examiner.com Taking a break from the decisions on who would win the mirror ball trophy, there was a little fun on the ballroom with Ylvis performing The Fox (What does the Fox...
Morgan Swann's insight:

So, I'm pretty sure we've all seen the music video "What does the Fox say", right? If not, here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbXbqBH_yiI

This is an example of a viral video. Sillly song, funny dance, pretty catchy and definitely popular. So popular, artist Ylvis had the opportunity to perform on Dancing With the Stars (DWTS).

According to Wikipedia, "Ylvis is a comedy duo from Bergen, Norway consisting of brothers Vegard and Bård Ylvisåker. They debuted as professional variety artists in 2000 and have since had a string of highly successful variety shows, comedy concerts, television shows, radio shows and music videos. They are currently the hosts of popular Norwegian talk show, I kveld med Ylvis (Tonight with Ylvis). Written and filmed for the talk show, their song and music video "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" went viral on YouTube in September 2013 with over 248 million views to date, bringing the brothers to international attention."

So, they're comedy artists that in 2 short months went viral and then went on to perform on a big time show like DWTS. Pretty remarkable, if you ask me.

Given DWTS past musical guest, (Michael Buble, Susan Boyle, The Black Eyed  Peas, Enrique Iglesias, Josh Groban, to name a few, it makes me wonder, is DWTS content producers following trends or trying to make a new one by inviting a comedy duo to perform?

Are they trying to increase viewership numbers by inviting viral video performers to be on the show instead of asking established musicians?

I'm not trying to say that Ylvis are not real music artists. They've clearly had a hand in an array of successful projects. The guys can sing, and they can sing well. And their performance on DWTS was amazing.  What I mean to say is, or distinguish is, they are a comedy duo where as the other artists are musicians that have worked for years making albums and I'll assume writing songs that have a little more depth (can't say this for all the artists I mentioned but... you catch my drift)

Artitst who have worked for years building an empire aren't being asked to perform on DWTS, but Ylvis is.

So what does that say? Are viral videos and songs becoming more prevalent and more in demand than studio records?

I just found this to be interesting.  You don't have to spend years in the business to be succesful. You just have to make something that makes A LOT of people ask  themselves,  what does the fox say??

"Living on a Prayer" has not been featured on the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 since the '80s. Fry's exotic and mesmerizing moves have captured audiences around the world and has allowed this classic to return to the airwaves.
