Google Needs a Strategy for Video on Android Devices

Google Needs a Strategy for Video on Android Devices | Video Technologies | Scoop.it

Unlike Apple's iOS platform, Google has yet to provide an easy way to get live video to Android devices. Worse yet, it hasn't offered a strategy for fixing the situation.

Many content owners who want to get their live event-based streaming content on mobile phones and tablets quickly find out that getting it to Android devices is extremely challenging. Unlike Apple’s iOS platform, Google has yet to provide an easy way to get live video to Android devices, and to date, it hasn’t detailed any strategy for fixing the situation. Many content owners I have spoken with, as well as those who help these content owners encode and distribute their video, are now questioning why they should even continue to go through all the trouble of trying to support Android-based devices at all.

Designing for Context: The Multiscreen Ecosystem

Designing for Context: The Multiscreen Ecosystem | Video Technologies | Scoop.it

To create applications and systems that are easy to use, it is crucial to understand the user and the context in which the app will be used. Understanding the context helps design systems that anticipate use cases at a relevant time of use. The more unobtrusive and transparent the experience is at the time of use, the better the design. This means the user does not have to think about the device he is using, changes in the environment, or changes in context, and can rely on great functionality and ease of use independent of his situation.

In traditional systems, the context of use did not change much. Whether the use was in the office or at a personal computer at home, the surroundings were similar and there was no need to adapt to different environments. In today's world, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs provide different services in different contexts. These services are consumed by a variety of users and require different interaction models, use cases, and planning. For this reason, UX professionals should first design for the context of use in order to provide better experiences and ultimately enhance the intended purpose of the product.

Developing Video Services for LG TV sets

Developing Video Services for LG TV sets | Video Technologies | Scoop.it

Essentially, an LG application platform is a Web browser based on WebKit of yet not the latest, but however not a too outdated version. The platform has been stripped of all the functionality that could even hypothetically disclose its browser-based nature: there is no address bar, back or forward buttons or other buttons of any kind, it does not allow you to enter text into forms, display JavaScript-based alerts or use any debugging tools. Even the window.onerror event, which could be helpful in tracing JavaScript errors, has been uprooted. It is assumed that all the necessary features should be implemented exclusively using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Standard HTML form elements are supported, but not recommended for use. The vendor development tools include the platform emulator, but first of all, it exists only in Windows based versions, and, second, we have found it awkward and useless in view in the context that almost all the application features can be easily debugged in the Google Chrome browser.

In addition to the software features of the platform, there are also limitations inherent to the type of user interaction with the TV and their hardware functionality. Let’s discuss the main of them.

Secure iOS Video Delivery and Playback: DRM Support

Secure iOS Video Delivery and Playback: DRM Support | Video Technologies | Scoop.it

HTTP Live Streaming (HTTP LS) is a protocol strongly recommended and actively promoted by Apple as the best solution for online video delivery to mobile devices. But neither the protocol itself, nor its tools offered by the iOS API, implement a full-fledged DRM support. The new version of Adobe Access 4.0 adds this missing functionality to the iOS-devices.
