Microsoft acquires Minecraft

Microsoft acquires Minecraft | Video game market | Scoop.it
Developer Mojang bought for $2.5 billion as Notch and other co-founders depart studio
Oulianov's insight:

It was apparently impossible for Notch to focus on small projets because of Minecraft.

Nothing changes for the explotation of Minecraft (communities, gameplay...) according to Phil Harrison.

Notch knows he is a symbol for the fans, and that by accepting the deal he does what he criticized for other developpers cf. the buyout of Oculus VR by Facebook.

EA Is Wrong: Comparing Free-to-Play Games to iTunes Makes No Sense - Motley Fool

EA Is Wrong: Comparing Free-to-Play Games to iTunes Makes No Sense - Motley Fool | Video game market | Scoop.it
EA Is Wrong: Comparing Free-to-Play Games to iTunes Makes No Sense Motley Fool Over the past two years, EA fumbled the launch of SimCity and Battlefield 4 with game-breaking bugs, then followed up those mistakes with nearly non-existent customer...
Oulianov's insight:

Peter Moore, COO of EA, claimed that the freemium model was to traditional video games what Apple's iTunes model was to CDs. This statement is wrong according to The Motley Fool:

- Music experience can be partial, whereas gaming is a complete experience. It works only when there is no narrative issue (cf Candy Crush)

- Freemium games have no price ceiling, they encourage addiction while iTunes encourages selective purchases. In fact "iTunes was launched as a response to consumer demand, while the freemium model was forced upon gamers despite consumer protests"

I strongly recommend this article.
