Welcome to Video for Learning, for the foreseeable future I will be curating resources to further the study and research, practice and discussion of video for learning. Online video; its creation, use and re-use for all stages of learning, will be explored from both pedagogical and technical viewpoints.
Where they provide extra value and contexts I will include older links and resources as well as new and breaking developments. I look forward to comments and feedback.

EmbedPlus could be a game-changer because the tools offer affordances that can add learning opportunities in to almost any video clip. (See also the Dial-e framework for further discussion). This new app for iPhone 4 and 4S offers an interesting and creative approach to video editing by allowing you to control and add effects to a video clip in real time as it is played. Even more interestingly the tools can also be used whilst you record a live video sequence. The special effects include motion, video and audio effects including, slow motion, zoom and reverse, and voice over and voice transformation. The video filters include B&W, old film and colour moods. I think there's is a lot of creative potential to explore and play with here, for educators. Hopefully interesting examples will be posted to YouTube, et al soon. Now in App store for £1.49 YouTube will be adding another ferature which should be very useful for educators, being able to show thumbnails will be ideal for developing digital story telling, review, questioning and predictive activities. Amit Agarwal writes:
"The next version of YouTube video player will have one very useful feature – you can hover your mouse to any point in the video, without actually moving the playhead, and the YouTube player will show you an image thumbnail of the video frame at the position.
Thus you can easily get a visual gist of the whole video while the clip is still buffering.

The Learning English Video Project (LEVP) is a new documentary series exploring the importance and focus on learning English around the world. It features interviews, case studies and examples of practice from seven countries, including a UK perspective. There is also a series of Videoblogs from the fimmakers which give a detailed background to the making of the project which has been developed by EnglishClub.com - a free site for teachers and learners of English. 
A free app that offers easy and intuitive video editing on Android tablets and Android phones is very welcome. It offers flexibility and oppoertunities for mobile video editing where students and classes have a mixed platform of devices. This tutorial describes how you can quickly create a time-lapse movie using Street View imagery from Google Maps and publish it to YouTube in HD.

There are over 1200 videos of living nature available on EOL http://eol.org/ all licenced under Creative Commons. 
YouTube's new simplified and redesigned Video Manager, accesible from the subscription drop down menu, will make it easier to manage and curate videos, this should prove especially useful in education because it is much easier to set up playlists, and review videos watched using the History option.
The Video Manager also makes it simpler to maage subscription adn find CC licenced videos. The online editor is also directly accessible. |
The viducate network - an initiative to promote video education across all educational sectors in Europe Our vision is: "Viducate is concerned with the development of active citizenship in intercultural contexts at all levels of formal and informal education. Video and multimedia form the core of this non-prescriptive pedagogy of production in the information society." Excellent to see another example of cross cultural collaboration in this important field. Viducate offers reports, newsletters conferences, workshops and hosts a community of practice.

Yesterday I posted about my concerns over YouTube suddenly added adverts to the school channel and, as I later discovered, also appearing before and over... ... This is a very interesting perspective of using YouTube in schools from a teachers point of view. It raises many issues that educators should be aware of and discuss. So thanks to Simon for the post and starting the debate. 
Digital and new media for museums is the Vimeo exposure channel of Infofilm / Museummedia in The Netherlands. Good to see the Netherlands Museums sharing their ideas and content through a dedicated video channel on Vimeo. Lets hope other museums may follow suit. Michael Wesch presented this "at the Library of Congress, June 23rd 2008. This was tons of fun to present. I decided to forgo the PowerPoint and instead worked with students to prepare over 40 minutes of video for the 55 minute presentation" Michael's analysis of YouTube draws the connections between video, Web technology and ourselves; exploring how these have changed behaviours and relationships. Whilst the numbers have grown exponentially, some of the demographics may have shifted, and the YouTube platform has evolved since this was put together; this is still essential viewing if you are interested in developing the potential of Video for Learning. The timecoded bookmarks are invaluable in helping get the most from this reosurce. Thanks to Oliver Quinlan for reminding me about this! 
"Avid Studio rolls onto iPad, treads on iMovie's toes" There are a growing number number of of apps available for video-editing on the iPad, (and also a the iPhone). This appears to be one of the most sophisticated. I dont think we are anywhere near the end of the road yet, in terms of mobile video editing, but as it takes will be certainly worth keeping an eye in a research context, asking what are the benefits of mobile video editing, (if any) as opposed to desktop? More from Avid's page here, and available on app store for £2.99 ($4.99) Frequency is a free iPad app for discovering, aggregating, watching and sharing online video. Frequency is easy works rather like Fipboard, in that you can search for your favourite channels and sources to add to the Tuner for quick access to the latest videos. Perhaps what might be most most useful is taht you can connect to you Facebook Twitter and YouTube accounts and watch the latest posting from you networks or on YouTube your favourited and uploaded videos. As with other, similar online tools, putting in some time to explore will bring its rewards. I look forward to seeing what other education professionals think of Frequency, or how they use it

Any educator, or indeed anyone who works with, or is interested in digital media, digotal literacy and technology, and how those agents affect our societies and cultures will find a great deal of value in these collected video interviews and prsentations by this visionary philosopher and educator. "His ideas are as arresting today as when they were first advanced in the 1960s – maybe even more so, as old inhibitions, restraints, conventions and decencies are one by one discarded" Andrea Zeitz As Andrea says in her Scoop.it post still relevant and well worth revisiting on a regular basis. 
"Start a Question & Answer page for any video on YouTube" Grockit Answers is very interesting tool, that allows one to initiate discussion around YouTube videos. It probabl;y needs a critical mass of users to get going so hope this post helps. 
I don't normally link to individual videos on Video for Learning but delighted to make an exception here. "Einstein's Theory of Relativity” is a silent animated film made in 1923 that tried to explain Einstein’s work to the general public" Made by Max Fleischer, (his famous works include Popeye and Betty Boop amongst others), this is a predecessor of educational video infographics. I think it helps put work from the likes of RSA and Commoncraft in a context. An interesting point raised in one of the comments is: "The model of the two revolvers attached to the wooden wagon wheel are so far removed from our modern society" .. but arguably still help convey the concept, as also mentioned in another comment: "In 1979, I once tried to explain orbital mechanics to my step-father, who was a Mississippi share-cropper born in 1933, turned career US Postman. I was 10 years old and understood it completely, but could not get it through his head that there was no up and down in space because it was all relative. Still, using that example to demonstrate relativity is quite simplistic." More on the film here (wikipedia). Where is the boundary between animated films and motion graphic design?
The video is part of the "Motion PLus Design" project which aims to bring inside an exhibition centre in Paris, the work of Motion Design artists.

It demonstatrate the potential learning with Internet based video. 
You Tube has just launched YouTube for schools which schools can sign up to using their School Google account.
The service will allow schools to access content from YouTube Edu that can can be futher filtered by "adminstrators." This is designed to facilitate "safe viewing" and I am sure it will be welcomed by many schools worldwide.
Whilst welcoming YouTube's proactive engagement with education; I also have a number of reservations about this service. You Tube Edu does not host the only good educational content available on YouTube I think it focuses too heavily on 'subjects' and grades rather than the interconnectedness of knowledge. Addtionally the feature to restrict videos to within an institution seems contrary to the open nature of the Internet.
On a positive note it will perhaps enable those schools where YouTube has been foolishly 'banned' to benefit from the wonderful video ecosystem that is YouTube. |
