Multicast nanoCDN might redefine streaming economics

Multicast nanoCDN might redefine streaming economics | Video Everywhere... with a headache | Scoop.it

Broadpeak was demonstrating its nanoCDN technology at the OTT TV World Summit this week, outlining how the innovative solution can dramatically reduce bandwidth requirements and also reduce costs for streaming video. The use of multicast, rather than unicast, for the streaming is at the heart of the solution. Broadband service providers with multicast networks (like telcos where they have a classic IPTV footprint) can harness this approach.

A video stream is duplicated (multicast) within the local CDN and client software on the home gateway is then used to convert a multicast stream back to unicast. This means that once in the home, there is no change to how the video is delivered from the gateway to the various multi-screen devices, whether these are laptops, tablets or mobile phones.

Performance Testing Results of Adaptive Media Streaming over HTTP/2 - BBC R&D

Performance Testing Results of Adaptive Media Streaming over HTTP/2 - BBC R&D | Video Everywhere... with a headache | Scoop.it

The main design objective of the HTTP/2 protocol is to improve the performance of client-side web page load times. The focus of our research is on finding out whether HTTP/2 is a good fit for media streaming applications. We are particularly interested in measuring server-side performance to understand the benefits and costs of this new protocol in the media streaming context compared with HTTP/1.1.
In order to gather data we ran a public trial over Christmas 2014 and reported the initial findings in our previous blog post. The data set obtained through the public trial was very interesting but despite serving over 25,000 requests, our analysis showed that it was not large or consistent enough to satisfy our research objectives. Adopting DASH and Multi-DRM Whitepaper

Adopting DASH and Multi-DRM Whitepaper | Video Everywhere... with a headache | Scoop.it

Multiscreen video is a now reality that consumers enjoy every day. While it may not be perfect, today’s online video experience usually ‘simply works,’ and it often attains a level of quality that rivals traditional TV. But behind the scenes, the delivery of video to any device, anytime, anywhere, hasn’t been so simple.

Google rencently announced that it would be discontinuing the existing plug-in architecture of its Chrome browser and enforcing HTML5 EME. In September 2015, the transition will be complete, and it will have a huge impact: more than half of all video consumers on PCs use Chrome.

Because of the ways that different software vendors are addressing this situation, there’s a genuine possibility that in September, video providers who don’t migrate to EME for Chrome users will lose the ability to serve those end users. This can damage the video provider’s reputation.

Although these changes are a significant break from the past, in reality, they will help video providers create consistent video experiences across devices, reduce time-to-market and, and make it easier to deal with change.

According to @MPEGgroup HEVC successor may be natively scalable. Check free scalable HEVC (SHVC) demos with GPAC | Video Everywhere... with a headache | Scoop.it

For the last few years, the GPAC tools backed demos at the French Tennis Open (Roland Garros) in its demo corner called RG Labs. This year, through the H2B2VS project, we participated in a demonstration showing the use of Hybrid Broadcast Broadband delivery for Ultra HD video content.

The video was encoded using the SHVC format with two layers. The encoder was MPEG reference software. The base HEVC layer, corresponding to HD content, was delivered using MPEG-2 TS, produced by our MP42TS tool. The enhancement layer, enhancing the spatial resolution to UHD, was delivered using MPEG-DASH generated by MP4Box. Both streams were synchronized based on the recent MPEG-2 TS TEMI extensions (inserted by MP42TS in the mux) and played by MP4Client, rendered on this nice curved 4K TV. You can find the press release by France TV here. (...)
