Corel Releases First HTML5-Capable Video-Editing Software

Corel makes one of the more appealing video editors around, VideoStudio Pro, and today the company announced the availability of the latest version of this enthusiast video-editing software, VideoStudio Pro X5.

The big news is the program's ability to generate HTML5 video content. Included authoring capabilites let users add clickable points on the Web video, such as cue points or video chapters. The software outputs to either H.264 or WebM formats. This means the video will display correctly in any browser that supports HTML, including the Apple iPad and iPhone's version of the Safari Web browser.

The State of Media and Entertainment Video 2012

Cord-cutting is on the rise, the futures of Netflix and Google TV are up in the air, and services like HBO GO are paving the way for a true anytime, anywhere online video universe.

In 2011, the streaming media world finally figured out what consumers want: everything. Subscription content on their TVs, mobile devices, and tablets? Yes. Premium first-run movies available for anytime streaming? Yep. Apps that deliver pay-TV content controlling living room DVRs? Certainly. Catch-up TV shows available online immediately after a show airs? Of course. Unlimited personalized music services that play whatever the listener wants to hear for no cost? Definitely. And for anything not covered by the above, there's always BitTorrent.

The media and entertainment industries made big strides online in 2011 and are poised for complete ubiquity in 2012. Consumers are getting more comfortable accessing streaming content, whether from a connected living room setup or a mobile device. The major studios are still leery of piracy and cannibalizing their DVD market, but they are determined to avoid the music industry's fate by making more titles available at reasonable prices. We're also seeing the growth of original online entertainment, which promises to help smaller names find an audience and bigger names develop new revenue streams.

The past year also saw its share of pitfalls and stumbles. Netflix, once the shining king of the streaming entertainment world, will spend 2012 trying to undo self-inflicted damage from a few poorly thought-out changes. And the rise of bandwidth caps by cell carriers threatens to strangle the streaming party just when it's getting good.

Adobe Prelude (ingest, logging and rough cut tool) sneak peek

At the San Francisco Supermeet Friday 27th January, Adobe’s Al Mooney revealed a sneak peek at a new application for the Creative Suite called Prelude.

Essentially Prelude is an ingest, logging and rough cut tool. It’s designed to make it easy to add log notes (a.k.a. metadata) quickly and easily, then perform a rough first string out to send to a craft (skilled) editor for the real work.

Interest in HTML5 grows, hits speed bumps

The role of hypertext markup language (HTML)5 in multi-screen video is rising, even as some implementations of the developing standard remain inconsistent. One of the original ways of “setting type” on the Web (as technology ‘translator’ Leslie Ellis put it in a column last year) HTML in its latest iteration is gathering steam as a means to link connected devices with video.

At one time, browsers needed various downloaded players to view video. Adobe’s decision last November to abandon work on its mobile Flash player in favor of HTML5 was one sign that the world was shifting. According to Strategy Analytics, sales of HTML5 compatible smart phones and feature phones hit 336 million in 2011 and will triple over the next two years.

The technology is impacting the rest of the video food chain. Interviewed for the Videonet report “Scaling multi-screen video,” HBO CTO Bob Zitter said that the first iteration of HBO Go used Adobe Flash, but that moving toward an HTML5 format could yield hoped-for efficiencies. “The bigger interest is flexibility and the way that it will work across multiple platforms,” he said.
