Rovi Takes On Adobe, Microsoft With ABR Streaming DivX Video Push

Rovi Takes On Adobe, Microsoft With ABR Streaming DivX Video Push | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Rovi will go head to head with the giants in the Internet-video streaming world, Adobe Systems and Microsoft, with DivX Plus Streaming, an adaptive bit-rate streaming solution the vendor claims provides superior quality and advanced DVD-like features.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Rovi obtained the DivX product line and technology -- originally designed for file-based video playback -- through its $720 million acquisition of Sonic Solutions, which closed earlier this year.

"We're definitely going to go up against Adobe and [Microsoft] Silverlight," Rovi executive vice president of products Corey Ferengul said. "What we're seeing is an interest in a broader set of features."

According to Rovi, the DivX Plus Streaming format already provides enhanced capabilities unavailable with other streaming solutions, including support for subtitles, multiple language audio tracks, DTS Audio, 1080p HD and trick-play features (fast forward, rewind, pause and resume).

In addition, the company claims DivX Plus Streaming offers more dynamic resolution scaling as bandwidth fluctuates because it uses a single server-based file for playback instead of breaking up video into small chunks. "We have a handful of improvements on quality so you get more of a DVD-like experience," Ferengul said.

IBC Watch: NDS launches next-generation Pay TV DRM

IBC Watch: NDS launches next-generation Pay TV DRM | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

In the build-up to IBC we are putting the spotlight on a handful of products we think are worth special attention at the show. This week it is VideoGuard Connect from NDS, a DRM designed to provide higher levels of service and content protection for Pay TV operators whose multi-screen TV offers are starting to mature in terms of how many viewers they have and the number of channels available, and therefore the value of the service to themselves and would-be pirates. NDS is not the only company focusing on the Pay TV over-the-top (OTT) opportunity at IBC2011, but it has already announced two major customers for this product: BSkyB, which is already using the solution for Sky Go, and DIRECTV. The company says there will be other announcements in the next few months.

VideoGuard Connect is designed to help TV operators to seamlessly extend their Pay TV services to connected media devices. It enables the secure ingestion, delivery and consumption of premium content over both managed and OTT networks while maintaining subscription privileges across devices. Using the solution, operators can deploy linear channels, on-demand content and download services on most of the popular multi-screen devices using the open Internet.

The rationale for VideoGuard Connect is enabling TV operators to capitalise on the opportunities presented by multi-platform Pay TV. It enables a wider range of business models, such as download rentals, expanded subscription packages and content bundling. Content purchased on the broadcast platform can be made available immediately on the broadband platform and vice-versa thanks to the integration of VideoGuard Connect with the operator’s existing broadcast platform.

RTMP streaming with FFmpeg – by Fabio Sonnati

RTMP streaming with FFmpeg – by Fabio Sonnati | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

This is the fourth and last part of a short series dedicated to FFmpeg.

In this conclusive article I will focus on the support for RTMP that makes FFmpeg an excellent tool for enhancing the capabilities of the Adobe Flash Streaming Ecosystem. FFmpeg introduced a strong support for RTMP streaming with the release 0.5 by the inclusion of the librtmp (rtmpdump) core. An RTMP stream can be used both as an input and/or as an output in a command line.

Using some of the parameters that we have seen in the first three parts of the series, it’s possible to do a lot of things that the standard Flash Streaming Ecosystem cannot offer. Sometimes there are minor bugs but generally speaking the rtmplib works well and helps FMS to fill the gap with some advanced feature of Wowza Server (like re-purposing of rtp/rtsp stream, TS-stream and so on).

Flingo Releases First Application Publishing Suite for Smart TVs - Includes Audio Synching Technology Built into CE Devices

Flingo Releases First Application Publishing Suite for Smart TVs - Includes Audio Synching Technology Built into CE Devices | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Emerging from stealth mode and announcing relationships with manufacturers including LG, Samsung, Vizio, Insignia, Sanyo and Western Digital - Flingo, a leading publisher of applications for the Smart or Connected TV, recently launched the first suite of application publishing products to seamlessly integrate the Web with the TV experience. And Flingo has made available a public API (application programming interface), so developers can build mobile and Web apps that use the television's inside knowledge. The TV will also display pop-ups on-screen, offering further Web-retrieved information about a show, or links to apps on the set itself.

This is in addition to Fling, the company’s Open Source project that lets people “fling” videos and music from the Web to a queue of programming on their television screen which allows viewers drag a bookmarklet to the browser bookmarks bar, and then browse a Flingo-supported website such as YouTube or Vimeo from a laptop or tablet. The website automatically searches for and discovers the viewer’s smart TV. People currently fling thousands of videos and music from the Web to their big screen TV every day. Viewers simply drag a bookmarklet to the browser bookmarks bar, and then browse a Flingo-supported website such as YouTube or Vimeo from a laptop or tablet. The website searches for and discovers the viewer's smart TV. Viewers can then click the bookmark to fling the video to the TV or media device.

AmberFin intros Unified Quality Control system

AmberFin intros Unified Quality Control system | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

AmberFin is rolling out the world’s first Unified Quality Control solution for content ingest and transcoding operations at IBC in Amsterdam next month.

Called iCR Unified QC, this unique approach to quality control combines multiple tools for baseband checks during tape ingest, file-based QC after ingest, and overall operator-controlled QC, including annotation and mark-up. The development of UQC represents one of the most significant developments to AmberFin’s iCR file-based content ingest and transcoding system in recent years.

The addition of UQC to AmberFin’s iCR means that users have the potential to create a high quality file-based HD/SD master, provide unique file conversion to multiple formats and implement appropriate levels of automated and manual quality control, all within a single unified software environment. New levels of trust and confidence in the file/media quality are introduced, freeing up staff to focus on other revenue-generating tasks. AmberFin’s intention is that UQC will become regarded as an industry benchmark in media quality control.

IBC watch: Civolution and second screen synchronisation

IBC watch: Civolution and second screen synchronisation | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

During our IBC build-up we are going to highlight some products we think are worth a special mention because they will help create a new market opportunity or solve a growing problem. This week we have chosen Civolution’s ‘VideoSync - 2nd Screen’ application because of its potential to help broadcasters and advertisers to fully exploit the companion screen experience.

2011 is turning into the year of the tablet as the evidence grows that these devices are going to completely change how consumers watch TV. It is argued that these could displace the PC as the most important second screen for TV, a view offered by Peter King, Director, Connected Home Devices at research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics earlier this year.

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry?

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
As summer draws to a close and we are all geared up for IBC 2011, a renewed focus on technical and commercial standards has emerged. While non-proprietary security standards may seem counter-intuitive (how can an open standard provide the right level of security to deliver high value content?), there are multiple benefits and clear value associated with a multi-vendor DRM scheme. These benefits have no doubt been amplified by recent progress on the fronts of multiple standards – plus the dramatically expanding landscape of multiple screens ideal for consuming video content.

Three Media Associates has launched XEN:, a data translation engine for broadcast workflows, allowing data to be moved and synchronised between applications such as databases, spreadsheets, and EPG systems, writes David Fox.

“Because of the way workflows have developed, all broadcasters have critical data distributed across Excel spreadsheets and other discreet applications,” explained TMA director, Dave Headdon. “They need to move this data from system A to system B, format A to format B. This is an everyday requirement, but we could not identify an existing tool to accomplish it simply, accurately and cost-effectively. XEN: was born out of our own frustration.”

Miso knows what you're watching, no check-in required

Miso knows what you're watching, no check-in required | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Social TV app Miso just got a lot smarter. The application, which lets users check in and share what they're watching on various social networks, will now be able to detect what they're watching, as long as those users are subscribers of DirecTV.

Taking out the step of actually checking in to a show will free up users to interact with second-screen content and other viewers with one less step in between, which fundamentally changes the value proposition for the app. It also gives Miso a big advantage over a lot of other social TV apps, like GetGlue, Tunerfish or even audio fingerprinting app IntoNow, by eliminating the biggest hurdle users face in interacting with the second screen.

‘Green Lantern’ Will Have an UltraViolet Hue | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

UltraViolet, the technology that enables consumers to buy a movie once and play it anywhere, is about to become a reality. Warner Home Entertainment Group confirmed Green Lantern will be the first movie released on DVD and Blu-ray to include the long-awaited UltraViolet when it hits retail on Oct. 14.

It’s not startling news, since Time Warner’s chairman and chief executive Jeffrey Bewkes had said in August that Green Lantern and Horrible Bosses would be the first two UltraViolet DVD releases.

“We believe that this could fundamentally change how people manage and watch their movie collections and it could significantly improve the value proposition of digital ownership,” Bewkes said at the time. “Remember, with UltraViolet, what will happen is, if you go and buy a physical DVD, you will have it in the cloud as you walk out of the store.”

Trident Embeds Audible Magic Digital Fingerprinting Technology into Its Digital TV Platform

Trident Embeds Audible Magic Digital Fingerprinting Technology into Its Digital TV Platform | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Audible Magic today announced that Trident Microsystems has integrated its SmartID automated content recognition system onto its digital TV (DTV) platform. Based on Audible Magic’s patented digital fingerprint content identification technology, the SmartID system will help Trident OEMs and ODMs and their application developers more fully capitalize on new opportunities in the emerging social TV, interactive advertising, and personalization markets.

For these developers, one key asset of the SmartID system is its ability to support both on-demand and continuous-identification modes. This makes it easy for applications to identify live television shows, movies, music, and advertising TV viewers watch, regardless of the media source: linear television, Blu-ray players, VoD, or over-the-top streamed media from companies such as Netflix or Hulu. As well as being critical to developing new applications for social TV, interactive advertising, and personalization, this capability is also essential to the integration of companion screen devices into the interactive viewing experience.

SyncTweet will sync TV ads with your Twitter stream

SyncTweet will sync TV ads with your Twitter stream | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

For years, viewers have found creative ways to ignore TV ads — some switch channels, some record shows and fast forward through ads later, but lately many TV viewers have taken to “tuning out” by turning to conversations happening on second-screen applications during ad breaks. Now brands will have a new way to connect with audiences during commercial breaks, by inserting messages into users’ Twitter streams while their ads show on TV. Startup SecondScreen Networks is rolling out a new product called SyncTweet that can automatically send Tweets during commercial breaks with the hashtag of the show that viewers are watching.

New SOA interoperability standard for media services to be announced at IBC

New SOA interoperability standard for media services to be announced at IBC | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The European Broadcast Union and Advanced Media Workflow Association will unveil the new SOA Framework for Interoperability of Media Services (FIMS) in TV Production at IBC 2011 in Amsterdam next month.

The EBU did not want to repeat work already done and so decided to adopt a model for SOA first developed almost a decade ago by the IT industry standards body Oasis as the basis for its planned framework. Subsequently, the EBU then found that the Media Workflow Association (AMWA), which focuses on file-based workflows to benefit content creators including film, television, advertising, Internet and post-production professionals, was working along similar lines. The two bodies then joined forces to develop the Framework for Interoperability of Media Services (FIMS), which was announced at NAB 2011 in Las Vegas, but without details.

Now the EBU and AMWA are ready to unveil FIMS 1.0, which will be demonstrated at the EBU Village near the IBC conference centre during the exhibition. The demonstration will show typical media services including capture, transfer and transcoding, with exchange of media files wrapped in the OP1a MXF (Material Exchange Format) versioning format.
