The Brief Guide for Choosing Low-budget Server-side Video Encoding Solutions to Create Streaming Video Site

The Brief Guide for Choosing Low-budget Server-side Video Encoding Solutions to Create Streaming Video Site | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

If you’ve ever wanted to create a streaming video site or add a video to server side, then you must have heard of FFMpeg and MEncoder. They are both famous open source projects and easy to get. Anyone can get these scripts at zero cost. However, some webmasters don’t want to be tied to a GPL or LGPL. So they try to find other server-side encoding solutions.

These solutions are called as FFMpeg MEncoder alternatives or adobe flash media server alternatives, and most of these alternatives are commercial projects. I used to join in a video site creation work and have made lots of preparation work. Except for the known FFMpeg and MEncoder, I also searched some commercial projects and YouTube clones. For me, my budget is limited, so I choose affordable top one rank product in Google (the search term is “server-side video converter”). This commercial project is Sothink video encoder engine from SourceTec software. For the request of some friends, I process the experience into an article and make some comparisons of these three projects, which helps those people who want to create streaming video sites or add videos to server side choose the appropriate projects.

Second screen sync: why audio watermarking is best

Second screen sync: why audio watermarking is best | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Audio watermarking is the only approach to content identification that gives broadcasters independence from service providers and full control over what happens to their content when it comes to second screen synchronisation. That is the view of Alex Terpstra, CEO at Civolution, whose ‘VideoSync - 2nd Screen’ solution uses audio watermarks in the programme feed that tablets or smartphones can ‘hear’ across a room in order to trigger events or functions within an application they are running. The watermarks can provide channel ID, programme ID and frame-accurate time codes to enable the synchronisation.

Synchronisation between what is playing on TV and what consumers do on their tablets is likely to create major new opportunities for broadcasters in terms of viewer engagement and advertising. The second screen represents green-field inventory for interactive TV and interactive advertising and we can expect a fight for control of that real-estate over the next couple of years. There are plenty of third-party app providers who want to build communities around social TV functions or special interest publishing content and ‘piggy-back’ those services onto broadcaster shows. Broadcasters will need to ensure they have their own programme-specific or channel-related second screen apps if they want to ‘own’ the viewer on both screens simultaneously.

What does file-based workflow really mean?

What does file-based workflow really mean? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

For perhaps two decades, much of the broadcast industry has made a fuss over “workflow,” treating the term as if it were something lofty and complicated - which of course, it isn’t. Workflow simply refers to the steps that users take to complete a task, start to finish. Thinking about workflow typically has been easy for the people and companies who actually perform the work. It’s been a little harder for vendors.

Over the past 20 years, vendors have had to transition from just knowing the “workflow” inside the boxes they sell to understanding larger workflows that encompass all of the boxes (and people) performing the work. The good news is that a transition across the industry is bringing the era of messy workflows to an end. This transition is being enabled by the “file-based workflows” now coming to prominence.

NetApp's Media and Entertainment Solution Enables Extreme Performance and Scalability for Managing High-Definition Video Content [PR]

NetApp's Media and Entertainment Solution Enables Extreme Performance and Scalability for Managing High-Definition Video Content [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

NetApp today announced a new solution for bandwidth-intensive environments that offers leaders in the media and entertainment industries high performance and always-available data access to maximize their collaborative efforts and improve workflow processes.

The NetApp Media Content Management (MCM) solution provides the infrastructure needed for video professionals and content developers to ingest, produce, process, archive, and deliver data with the flexibility to scale performance and capacity.

In recent testing by ATTO Technology using the company's Celerity Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) with Multipath Director technology, the NetApp MCM solution outperformed all previously tested storage subsystems. New benchmarks were set across several media industry test regimens, including the number of uncompressed HD video streams simultaneously supported for Final Cut Pro editors. With four Macintosh clients running Final Cut Pro 7, the NetApp MCM solution played back 22 uncompressed HD (1920 x 1080, 10-bit YUV) video streams overnight without dropping any frames.

How To Become An Expert In DSM-CC

How To Become An Expert In DSM-CC | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Many people in the DTV industry have only a basic understanding of DSM-CC, and sometimes not even that. For MHP and OCAP developers, it's a technology that you need to know something about. It's not necessary to know all of the details, but a general idea of what goes on and why is essential to building applications that work well and load quickly.

The detailed parts of this tutorial are contained in separate sections, and are really only for people who are implementing MHP or OCAP receivers, or head-end systems that need to build object carousels for those receivers: other readers should not need to stray from the main page of this tutorial into the more technical discussions of specific parts of DSM-CC.

He is predicting that second screen apps will change the TV industry faster than most people think and that the growing influence of social TV, including chat and content recommendation, will change the way we discover content and also change the rules about who owns the consumer.

Streaming 3D Video: Should Your Company Get Onboard?

Streaming 3D Video: Should Your Company Get Onboard? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

"To 3D or not to 3D? For streaming media content producers, providers, and distributors, that is indeed the question.

There’s no doubt that 3D streaming video offers a wow factor — something that should compel people to watch. But is the extra bandwidth, equipment, and cost really worth the expense — especially for streaming content to computer desktops and laptops? As William Shakespeare himself might say, there’s the rub: When it comes to cost-benefit analyses, the payoff from 3D streaming video is hard to quantify."
