Zencoder and Aspera Team Up to Support Encoding of Large Video Files in the Cloud [PR]

Zencoder and Aspera Team Up to Support Encoding of Large Video Files in the Cloud [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Zencoder today announced that they have added support for Aspera's fasp high-speed transport technology to enable content providers to quickly and securely transfer large files to the cloud for transcoding.

While the scalability of the cloud is perfectly suited for processing-intensive jobs such as video transcoding, bandwidth constraints can make it a challenge to get video into and out of the cloud. With Aspera integrated into the Zencoder platform, video providers can now send video content to the cloud for transcoding at up to 700 Mbps. Once a file is in the Zencoder platform, it can be transcoded faster-than-real-time into several outputs formats simultaneously, creating massive efficiencies when compared to traditional transcoding methods.

Emeric blogs about Development of a hardware-accelerated VP8 video decoder

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As promised, today we’ll talk about video decoding. We will review the most important operations that a decoder has to fulfill, and for each case see what kind of speed boost we can expect with a shader based video decoding. Because video decoding is a complex process and one blog post can hardly be thorough, I’ll provide related links for each chapter, if you wish to start your own research on a particular subject

Let’s begin with a quick overview of the most important operations of a VP8 video decoding process...

Mozilla Reinvents Web Video With Popcorn 1.0

Mozilla Reinvents Web Video With Popcorn 1.0 | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Video on the web has always been a bit disappointing. After all, it’s pretty much just like television, only smaller. Unlike the rest of the web, video is just as much a passive experience in your browser as it is anywhere else.

Mozilla would like to change that. The company’s effort to bring a more interactive video experience to the web is known as Popcorn.js and it recently reached 1.0 status. If you’d like to play around with Popcorn, head on over to the Mozilla site and download a copy. Popcorn uses HTML5 video features and at the moment works best in Firefox and Chrome.

At its core, Popcorn is about making HTML5 web video into something more than just another television.

Digitalsmiths Rolls Out "Seamless Discovery" Platform for Video Recommendations

Digitalsmiths Rolls Out "Seamless Discovery" Platform for Video Recommendations | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Late last week, video search and recommendation technology provider Digitalsmiths quietly introduced its "Seamless Discovery" platform, targeted to pay-TV operators, consumer electronics companies and content producers who want to deliver highly relevant recommendations to their users. The platform addresses the urgent problem that users are fragmenting their viewing over multiple devices where the discovery experience is inconsistent and lacking.

In a phone briefing, Digitalsmiths' CEO Ben Weinberger explained that a key differentiator for Seamless Discovery is that it draws from multiple data sets in order to provide recommendations, resulting in improved relevance. At the core is metadata Digitalsmiths creates on the programming available from the pay-TV operator, CE device or content owner. For pay-TV operators specifically, this involves ingesting full schedule information from sources like Tribune Media Services. This metadata is mapped with contextual and behavioral data and "social graph" information from Facebook along with other inputs. The system learns over time from the choices the user makes which of these factors is most relevant, tweaking future recommendations accordingly.

Launching of large-scale online video portals requires a great deal of precision and accuracy at the design stage. In addition to complex infrastructure of a Web platform (the portal itself), we have to deal with a no less complex infrastructure video platform (as content delivery is only part of the platform). In this post, we will discuss some of the important principles of online video service design that we have learned over the five years of working on similar projects.

3 issues related to DASH

3 issues related to DASH | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Although it is not exactly what the MPEG scientists have promoted for a decade, most of today's video traffic is based on HTTP and TCP (Netflix player, Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Adobe OSMF). And it works. The video traffic is exploding: adaptive streaming already represents most than one third of the Internet traffic at peak time, and it is expected to prevail, even on mobiles. Facing this plebiscite, the MPEG consortium has launched the process of standardizing DASH into MPEG.

Despite the multimedia scientific community and the video standardization group are large lively communities, many research issues related to DASH have not been anticipated and sufficiently addressed :

- congestion control may be compromised

- encodings bottlenecks unpredictability

- lack of swarming support

Adobe is working on a DRM solution for HTML5 (post-storm communication by Pritham Shetty, Adobe VP)

Adobe is working on a DRM solution for HTML5 (post-storm communication by Pritham Shetty, Adobe VP) | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Pritham Shetty : "We are focusing our efforts on the experiences our customers are actively building, and reducing our focus on areas that are not widely used but require significant resources. This enables us to focus on unsolved problems, like standardized dynamic streaming and DRM for HTML5, that are holding back reach and monetization across devices."

This is what Adobe will support:

1. Desktop: Flash Player as a browser plug-in

2. Mobile Browser: Flash Player 11.1 will be available on Android and Blackberry. Adobe is committed to creating great tools and technologies for HTML5 experiences and server-side technologies to deliver HTML5 video (Ex. FMS 4.5 streaming to iOS).

3. Mobile Apps: Flash based apps packaged with AIR which can be distributed via all of the major app stores, including Apple’s App Store, Android Market, Amazon’s App Store etc.

4. TV apps: Ability to embed Flash video in native HTML apps as well as Flash based apps packaged with AIR

This is what Adobe will not support:

1. Future versions of Flash as a mobile browser plug-in. Increasingly, mobile OS manufacturers are excluding browser plug-ins, limiting our ability to use Flash to solve mobile browser fragmentation

2. Browsing on a TV. We believe the apps, not browsing to a website, will be the primary way viewers access premium video and games on TVs and peripherals. Specifically, we will not ensure that, for example, 10 year-old websites will render flawlessly on TVs because most people are not browsing 10 year-old websites on TVs.

Second screen advertising is a new paradigm

Second screen advertising is a new paradigm | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Commercial broadcasters need to move quickly to ensure they have engaging second screen apps and content to keep viewers loyal beyond the main television screen, then find ways to sell that new inventory to advertisers. We are facing a period of disruption during which third-parties will fight them for eyeballs with companion apps that are synchronised, possibly in real-time, with what is happening on the television.

There could be new advertising money for TV, flowing from direct marketing budgets because of the interactivity and social engagement that is possible on the second screen. But there is no guarantee that this money will go to the people that created the programming that this new inventory relies upon. And there are warnings from the advertising industry that there will be no sentimental loyalty to broadcasters where direct marketing and data-centric buying agencies are involved.

While it is early days for synchronised second-screen advertising, it looks like this is going to be big.

MPEG DASH: The File Format of the Future?

MPEG DASH: The File Format of the Future? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

A common file format for HTTP video delivery might be just around the corner, according to panelists at Streaming Media West.

"If HLS were perfect, DASH would not exist," said Thierry Fautier, Harmonic's senior director of telco solutions, referring to Apple's proprietary HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol and the newer MPEG-backed Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG DASH) standard specification.

"What Apple has introduced to IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) is merely an informational draft," added another panelist on the five-person panel. "We don't see that they're necessarily planning to push HLS as a true internet standard."

The MPEG DASH panel, led by Microsoft's Iraj Sodagar, who has chaired the MPEG subcommittee on DASH for the past year, was a hot ticket at the 2011 Streaming Media West show, held this week at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. A standing-room only crowd listened to representatives from a number of companies that are on the MPEG-DASH promoters' group.
