Chelsio Delivers StreamEngine – Media Streaming Solution Dramatically Increases Video And Content Delivery Performance [PR]

Chelsio Delivers StreamEngine – Media Streaming Solution Dramatically Increases Video And Content Delivery Performance [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Chelsio Communications, a leading provider of 10Gb Ethernet Unified Wire Adapters, ASICs and Unified Storage software solutions, today announced a media streaming enhancement to its T4 Unified Wire adapters targeted at high performance content delivery applications. The Chelsio StreamEngin adds video segmentation offload and per-stream rate limiting functionality to the TCP and UDP offload capabilities of the T4 Unified Wire adapters to significantly reduce CPU utilization, increase video and content delivery capacity and improve service quality.

-- Video Segmentation Offload --
Tailored for video content, the StreamEngine segmentation offload technology moves the processing required to packetize video data and control its transmission rate from the server to the network adapter. Video Segmentation Offload (VSO) increases performance and dramatically reduces CPU overhead, allowing significantly higher capacity using the same server hardware. Without VSO support, video server software needs to packetize payload into frames, process each frame individually through the network stack and schedule individual frame transmission, resulting in millions of system calls and packet traversal through all protocol layers in the operating system to the network adapter.

-- Rate Shaping --
Rate Shaping within the StreamEngine allows Content Delivery Networks/Video On Demand providers to avoid receive buffer overflows, smooth out network traffic, and enforce Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Without dedicated hardware-based rate shaping or limiting support, the video server must perform rate limiting in software, a CPU intensive task that can be prohibitive at 10Gb and higher rates.

Debugging Your Custom IIS Transform Manager Task

Debugging Your Custom IIS Transform Manager Task | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

During an initialization phase, the ITask interface provides your custom task with injected dependent objects, see here for more details on these objects. One challenge while writing a custom ITask implementation is debugging your task with real-time injected values. One approach is to have your debugger launch a finished or failed job in a similar environment as the IIS Transform Manager would.

Here are the high level tasks to achieve this:

- Run and locate a job instance

- Identify the program and arguments to execute

- Setup the working environment

- Run the command under your debugger

Microsoft Releases Expression Encoder 4 SP2 with QuickSync encoding acceleration

Microsoft Releases Expression Encoder 4 SP2 with QuickSync encoding acceleration | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Pro users will gain GPU-accelerated encoding with the Intel HD Graphics GPU included in Sandy Bridge processors. NVIDIA CUDA support has also been improved.

The program now offers 1- and 2-pass variable bit rate encoding for H.264-based Smooth Streaming (in the Pro version), support for more bitrate and sample rate options when using the AAC codec, and support for SRS audio encoding.

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
At Streaming Media West 2010 last November, Microsoft launched IIS Media Services 4.0. This HTTP-based media server stack plugs into Internet Information Services (IIS), the web server built into Windows. Unlike traditional streaming servers, IIS Media Services scales out using any HTTP caching server, rather than requiring specific downstream streaming media servers. Today, Microsoft announced it is releasing the beta of a new IIS extension we previously discussed called IIS Transform Manager.

IIS Media Services extensions effectively turn IIS into a media origin server, but because IIS Smooth Streaming can use either IIS caching servers or any other standard HTTP caching servers downstream to scale (rather than requiring specific downstream streaming servers, as traditional streaming servers such as FMS or WMS typically do), the scale-out is not at all locked to any one server solution.

Microsoft sees Transform Manager as an integral part of an Expression Encoder 4 Pro encoding workflow in three areas: converting existing content libraries to other formats, such as Smooth Streaming; constant ingest/ transcode; and converting fragmented MP4 files to Apple HTTP Live Streaming segments for on-demand content delivery.
