The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride brought out 25 local warriors and 30 warriors from other areas to participate Nov. 16, 2013 in a 23 mile bike ride that started and ended at Boerne High School. There were stops along the way for the participants so they could get water and regroup as the purpose of the event was to have a group ride, not a race. Along with cycling the warriors played golf the day before and followed the cycling with yoga. Wounded Warrior Project provides state-of-the-art cycling equipment to Wounded Warriors at no cost.

Veterans as Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship, a training program funded by the Small Business Administration and administered by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management, offers female veterans and military spouses a 15-day online course in basics such as business structure and marketing, followed by an intensive three-day conference held in cities across the country. According to Tina Kapral, the institute’s director of educational programs, almost 60 percent of the nearly 900 graduates to date have successfully launched or grown their own small businesses. The success rate, Kapral says, is largely due to the strong skills the women veterans bring into the program in the first place...

veterans crowded into theconference center at the Wonderland of the Americas mall Saturday for a mental health summit. The summit is the result of an executive order signed last year calling on the VA to better coordinate with local organizations that provide mental health services to veterans... “This is an opportunity to build a coalition, regardless of how we already work with some organizations,” he said. “We can always do a better job.” There's a larger area for improvement in rural areas, and a similar summit Sept. 14 in Kerrville will address that issue.

New center in Chico helps veterans of all eras

Whether they served during World War II, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or those in-between, veterans can get help at Chico's Veterans Resource Center. The center opened Nov. 13 [...] through a V.A. grant, which actually has an agenda, to help 70 veterans and their families find stable housing in Butte County.
