NewsDaily: Plant study flags dangers of warming world

NewsDaily: Plant study flags dangers of warming world | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted in response to climate change, research in the United States showed on Wednesday, which could have devastating knock-on effects for food chains and ecosystems.

"Scientists estimate the world's average temperature has risen by about 0.8 degrees Celsius since 1900, and nearly 0.2 degrees per decade since 1979.

So far, efforts to cut emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as sufficient to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2 degrees C this century - a threshold scientists say risks an unstable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels."

Nepal holds water festival for sustainable use of water | Eco-Business.com

Nepal holds water festival for sustainable use of water | Eco-Business.com | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it

"Though Nepal stands as the second richest country in water resources after Brazil and has a large number of river basins and fresh water flowing, the population of the nation lacks pure drinking water, a condition which has worsened in the recent times due to climate change. ...

Experts believe that the trend in climate change shows that the continuous decrease in snow accumulation and glacial retreat might lead to acute water shortages in the future.

According to Department of Water Supply and Sewerage in Nepal, Nepal’s population of 27 million has 42 percent of people living under the poverty line. Out of this population, only 80 percent people have access to drinking water."

Current Events: 'Green bullet' innovations aim to feed world of 9 billion

Current Events: 'Green bullet' innovations aim to feed world of 9 billion | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
Current Events: Feeding a world of 9 billion will require fundamental changes to unsustainable but well-entrenched policies and practices.

In flood-hit fields in the Philippines, farmers are testing a hardy new variety of rice that can survive completely submerged for more than two weeks.

In Kenya's Kibera slum, poor urban families are turning around their diets and incomes just by learning to grow vegetables in sack gardens outside their doors.

And in India, a push to help marginalised rural communities gain title to their land is leading to a significant drop in hunger.

These are just a few of the kinds of innovations and intitiatives that experts say will be critical if the world is to feed itself over coming decades as the population soars, cities sprawl and climate change takes its toll.

LA smog: more cows than cars?

LA smog: more cows than cars? | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
A new study estimates that dairy farms outside Los Angeles contribute at least as much haze-causing ammonia as automobiles.

" ... contrary to expectations, traffic and dairy farms appear to be about equally responsible for a sizeable fraction of the haze over the Los Angeles region. Actually, it’s a little more complex than that—because the ammonia downwind of the dairies is much more concentrated, conditions favor greater NH4NO3 particle formation there. So, even for equal amounts of total ammonia, dairies will have an outsized impact on air quality.

Obviously, that’s important information for efforts to clean up the air around Los Angeles. The biggest impact would come from helping dairy operations use ammonia reducing practices, like treatment of waste, proper storage, and dietary changes. That could make a difference for the over 4 million people who live downwind."
