Dry Nevada seeing green in indoor farming

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Don't be fooled by the electric green foliage and pungent scents at Ken Kesick's farm. It's not like most farms you've ever seen.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development today announced that Gov. Brian Sandoval will lead a Nevada trade mission to Israel in mid May. The Governor, who will travel with Nevada business and government representatives, has been invited to speak at the 18th International Agricultural Exhibition in Tel Aviv May 15-17. The Office of Economic Development is handling logistics for the trade mission.

“I am thrilled to be heading to Tel Aviv to meet our Israeli counterparts,” Sandoval said. “This trade mission will give members of Nevada’s business community and government leaders an opportunity to discuss ways Nevada and Israel can work together in pursuit of jobs and investment.”

Nevada and Israel share similar geographic features, including an arid climate. The trade mission will include opportunities to discuss the technologies that Nevada and Israel are pursuing to expand their water supplies for residential and commercial needs, including agriculture. Other areas of discussion will focus on the further development of key economic sectors including cyber security, clean energy and technology commercialization.

The recently released SRI/Brookings Development Agenda for Nevada calls for further diversification of the state’s economy by setting a platform for higher-value growth through innovation and global engagement.

“This trade mission is about developing partnerships, identifying ways that we can work together and finding similarities that will allow us to drive our economies and job creation,” said Steve Hill, director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

The Israel trade mission will be funded through private-sector participation, a common technique used by other states. The Israeli Consulate will also assume a share of the cost.

About the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development
The office’s mission is to promote, aid and encourage economic development in the State of Nevada. This is achieved through programs including national and international Business Development, Community Development Block Grants, Procurement Outreach and the Nevada Film Office. NGOED has offices at 808 W. Nye Lane in Carson City, Nev., and at 555 E. Washington Ave., Suite 5400 in Las Vegas. Benjamin Martinez's curator insight, February 8, 1:11 AM

I really enjoyed reading this article because it gave me a different inside perspective on the aspects of growing natural local food. Right now I am a student at California State University Channel Islands and I have an interest in becoming some sort of farmer one day. So with all honesty, I found this article very informational due to the fact that I did not know the University of Hawai’i had classes on the construction and production of agriculture.  Actually reading about the insights of students who have experienced this type of life has helped me realize I have always had a soft side for growing plants of the natural environment. One thing that caught my attention revolved around the idea of starting a business through the concepts of farming. So what I want to say is that I am interested in the idea of owning my own business and farm. It helps me realize how I want to help the world and my community by growing food we all can eat.

Community Composting Grows from a Seed into a Movement

Community Composting Grows from a Seed into a Movement | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
Three years ago, Dustin Fedako attended the US Composting Council’s annual conference. As founder of Compost Pedallers, a bike-powered compost recycling program in Austin, Texas, Fedako didn’t know what to expect from the conference, which is geared toward the industrial composting model. He just wanted to “sponge up as much as he could.” He learned a lot and he also spent a lot of time explaining what community composting is.
