Why Eating Seasonally and Locally Is Better for You (and Your Wallet)

Why Eating Seasonally and Locally Is Better for You (and Your Wallet) | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
Health experts and chefs both often say you should eat "seasonally," or include foods in your diet that are grown at the same time of the year you eat them. For example, that means squash in the summer and fall, and artichokes in the spring. Eating seasonally is important, and carries benefits to your health, the planet, and your wallet. Here are some of them.

Next time someone claims you don't care about humanity because you question "Golden Rice", Jill Richardson gives you some solid reasons to stand your ground.

Kristen E. Sukalac's comment, Today, 3:35 AM
Regardless of what you think about Golden Rice, I have to respectfully disagree that these are solid reasons. This article is composed of anecdotal evidence and there is nothing to indicate that any measures have been taken to protect against confirmation bias. Ms Richardson says that only people suffering from undernourishment suffer from malnutrition, and that is patently untrue. While less than one billion people go hungry today (still a shockingly high number), one in three suffer from malnutrition. Recent research to under the extent of nutrient deficiencies is a huge step forward in acknowledging the need for a holistic approach to improving nutrition that goes beyond counting calories. http://www.micronutrient.org/english/View.asp?x=573
Arpita Bhattacharjya's comment, Today, 7:31 AM
Why would I rely on someone's travel anecdotes as compared to scientific evidence? Just because it does not suit my scary, anti-science narrative which lets kids go blind and die? This is so wrong and sad. Yes, people need more food but poor people cannot afford fruits and vegetables and the nutrients they provide, their diet mostly consists of staples and fortifying those is a good solution. A parent whose child is suffering before their eyes would be grateful for what the writer contemptuously terms "colored grains". how do I know this? I did not travel anywhere but I lived among these people.
