La acuaponía es una técnica de cultivo que combina la acuicultura (cría de animales acuáticos) tradicional y la hidroponía (cultivo sin suelo) que se desarrolla en un ciclo cerrado. Su principal particularidad es el desarrollo de una relación simbiótica, ya que el nitrógeno que generan los peces como deshecho, es aprovechado por las plantas como nutriente.


Tal y como recogía hace un tiempo un artículo de la web Consumer, es un sistema de explotación sostenible que cada vez cuenta con más adeptos en países como EEUU.


Los vegetales con mayor productividad con las lechugas y los repollos, aunque admite una amplia variedad de vegetales. En el video, por ejemplo, las especies cultivadas son para la elaboración de ensaladas. En cuanto a los peces, aunque es válido cualquiera de agua dulce, las que mayor rentabilidad ofrecen son las tilapias, que sobreviven en condiciones de alta densidad poblacional.


El modelo de acuaponía que sale en el vídeo pertenece a una compañía de Reino Unido, GrowUp Urban Farms, que recicla contenedores de mercancías. Este proyecto inició su andadura gracias a una campaña en Kickstarter.


¿Alternativa para complementar el suministro de alimentos? Pues por el momento no se trata más que de una iniciativa orientada a los mercados locales o el autoconsumo. Su explotación industrial requiere de altas necesidades energéticas o de recursos alimenticios para los peces.
