Charlie Dare's curator insight, July 11, 6:31 PM

There is a PDF download here that may be of particular interest to to the LinkedIn Professional Aquaponics Group I delighted to be a member of with many cutting edge informative members that share information about automation and aspirations to contribute to future global food security ~ It takes money to make money~ I,m biased towards Family farms but are not oblivious to the fact that factory corporate farming has and is part of every day food production on a scale beyond the reach of the family farm~ It may offer opportunities to those who maybe dealt a bad hand by fate in this new innovative food production method by capitalizing on the knowledge they have after going bust on their own as many ventures have to-date ~

For more than a half-century, NASA has made the stuff of science fiction into reality. Researchers are continuing that tradition by designing robots to work in a deep-space habitat, tending gardens and growing food for astronaut explorers. The Flat-Rate Live Sales Model: Local Greens Explains

The Flat-Rate Live Sales Model: Local Greens Explains | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
As Upstart Farmers know, implementing a live sales model can be much more complicated than it sounds. When faced with sales challenges at their local Whole Foods, Local Greens, in collaboration with UrbaFresh, didn’t give up. Demonstrating the true spirit of an Upstart Farmer, Faye and Ron Mitchell developed something entirely new. Faye was kind enough to tell us all about how their flat-rate sales concept came to be and offer suggestions for other Upstart Farmers.
The Case of the Disappearing Herbs

Local Greens first brought their live towers of ZipGrow basil and mint to local Whole Foods in April. Pretty quickly, they realized something was not adding up.
“In May, [Whole Foods was] registering about one pound per week being purchased, but we were replacing 1- 3 towers every three days.”
How many pounds of herbs per ZipGrow tower? One basil tower produces 2 - 3 pounds every five weeks. Mint takes more time to establish (6-7 weeks), but then produces 3-4 pounds every three weeks.…
