china paves the way for a new definition of urban farming

in an age of exponential population growth and the constant transition of our cities, china reconfigures the relationship between agricultural and urban.

Reilley Burrows's curator insight, Today, 5:03 PM

Although this article was based off information from 2011, it holds powerful information on how major populated cities within China who have started to turn around their ecosystem and opted for a more sustainable life. Urban farming has boomed in major cities within China, and it was so efficient that they almost all exclusively sustained themselves with their local produce. Most of which were sold within 10km of the farm. They have better knowledge of what they produce as well as what they waste.

For example, in Shanghai they produced 100% of chicken, milk and eggs, 80% of vegetables and freshwater fish and 50% of pork. Now that’s some serious local farming which they should be extremely proud of. This of course was urban and rural farming, but citizens found themselves to become part of this movement. Think of how much better Canada’s ecosystem and trade would be if we opted for a movement targeted at strict organic, urban and rural farming. We would import less and potentially export more. Not only that but just like China, our cities would be greener, cleaner and the people happier. We would have a better understand of our waste, that being organic, and thus more responsible in the production and use of our energy.

Yes, it may sounds much easier than the reality, but if a country like China, holding 20% of the worlds population and start to make their changes there’s no reason we can’t start. There is no better way to sustain your economy than putting citizens money back into our country. I hope others in the class can see how important this is and hopefully start making little changes to their lives, a plant here, a crop there, banana tree? Why not try it out.

Special microbes make anti-obesity molecule in the gut | Vertical Farm - Food Factory | Scoop.it
Microbes may just be the next diet craze. Researchers have programmed bacteria to generate a molecule that, through normal metabolism, becomes a hunger-suppressing lipid. Mice that drank water laced with the programmed bacteria ate less, had lower body fat and staved off diabetes -- even when fed a high-fat diet -- offering a potential weight-loss strategy for humans.
