Music Week - EDITORIAL: You still need royalties when you're 64 | Verlenging naburige rechten | Scoop.it

Forty-nine years ago next month EMI issued the debut single by a certain Liverpudlian combo.

Love Me Do became The Beatles’ very first hit. It means that, under existing legislation, in little more than a year’s time the Fab Four’s recording catalogue will start to go out of copyright, representing not only a huge loss to those directly involved but symbolically becoming the most blatant illustration yet this industry is rapidly losing its precious heritage to public domain.

Sellaband - Hind - Promotion Project - It has been a while | Verlenging naburige rechten | Scoop.it
Before the release of the album we´ve set up a great action with our crossmedia mediapartners. We wanted to give away a free download: " Don't leave me behind". We could reach over 5.5 million consumers ! It was great, everything was ready to go. But then "our" protector of music rights, the so called Buma Stemra said when we would give away a free download, we'd had to pay an amount of € 0,06 per download upfront based upon the estimate of 5.5. million!!! That would have been approximately €350,000.
Well, being an independent I really don't know where to get that amount of money from. Besides that it is absurd to pay for a song you've written and produced (with our team) yourself!
