Sustaining Seven Billion People

Sustaining Seven Billion People | Tetra Verde | Scoop.it

"With seven billion people now living on Earth, the ever growing demand is putting unprecedented pressure on global resources—especially forests, water, and food. How can Earth’s resources be managed best to support so many people? One key is tracking the sum of what is available, and perhaps nothing is better suited to that task than satellites."

Daniel LaLiberte's curator insight, July 6, 2014 12:09 PM

Such studies of the agriculture around the world are essential. The way we are doing agriculture to support seven billion people now, peaking at 9-10 billion in another 60 years, it is clear that we are putting severe strains on the environment.  But we have grown lazy, and we are doing it all wrong.

We CAN drastically reduce the amount of meat we consume, and thus quickly reduce the amount of arable land we need.  We CAN grow plants in ways that actually sequester more carbon and improve the soil it over time rather than erode and degrade.  And we CAN in fact grow all the food we need in the space we live in, thus enabling us to recycle all the water used as well, which is mostly just lost in evaporation.

Capturing green energy from deep in the Earth will bring competitive electricity and district heating – with help from Norway. Ever since Jules Verne’s 1864 novel “ A Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, people have dreamt of capturing the heat of planet Earth. It exists in huge amounts, is completely renewable and emits no CO2.

Winning at Sustainability–Turning Principles into Action

Winning at Sustainability–Turning Principles into Action | Tetra Verde | Scoop.it

With more people saying they're willing to pay more for products and services from socially responsible companies, how can companies communicate that they’re on the same page? The most direct option may be how you’ve been communicating with them for years—at the point of sale. Making your social commitment clearly visible on your product packaging is not only a good way to tout your product’s benefits, but it can also be the difference between a purchase and a pass for many consumers.

Tahnee explains that this is the second lesson of a two-part series. There is a detailed lesson plan, and the site lists what is needed to complete the task.

Students learn about warmth, sunlight, water and soil - the things that are needed in order for plants to grow.

Basics of agriculture including where most foods come from, how plants are grown, and the process farm products undergo prior to being sold in shops are all explained.

To address climate change, nothing substitutes for reducing carbon dioxide emissions

To address climate change, nothing substitutes for reducing carbon dioxide emissions | Tetra Verde | Scoop.it
The politically expedient way to mitigate climate change is essentially no way at all, according to a comprehensive new study. Among the climate pollutants humans put into the atmosphere in significant quantities, the effects of carbon dioxide are the longest-lived, with effects on climate that extend thousands of years after emissions cease. But finding the political consensus to act on reducing carbon dioxide emissions has been nearly impossible. So there has been a movement to make up for that inaction by reducing emissions of other, shorter-lived gasses, such as methane, hydrofluorocarbons, and nitrous oxide, and particulates such as soot and black carbon, all of which contribute to warming as well.

A study released today profiles 100 leading sustainability innovations. We showcase the top 10, featuring carbon-neutral plastic, e-waste recycling kiosks and an ethical smartphone. What's missing here are whole sets of other kinds of innovations. These are all product or technical innovations. But what about process innovations? Business model innovations? Management innovations? Social inventions? And even markets innovations? If we are to make a massive shift to a sustainable + full spectrum flourishing world we need a larger focus on a much fuller spectrum of innovation. This is a good start.
