Can MapReduce solve planning problems?

Can MapReduce solve planning problems? | Venezuela Expressions For Liberty & Human Rights | Scoop.it

To solve a planning or optimization problem, some solvers tend to scale out poorly: As the problem has more variables and more constraints, they use a lot more RAM memory and CPU power. They can hit hardware memory limits at a few thousand variables and few million constraint matches. One way their users typically work around such hardware limits, is to use MapReduce.

Near-real-time monitoring: Global Forest Watch

Near-real-time monitoring: Global Forest Watch | Venezuela Expressions For Liberty & Human Rights | Scoop.it

Global Forest Watch uses satellite imagery and other technologies to estimate forest usage, change, and tree cover (among other things). These estimates and their eventual actions used to be slow. Now they're near-real-time.

The online forest monitoring system created by the World Resources Institute, Google and a group of more than 40 partners uses technologies including Google Earth Engine and Google Maps Engine to map the world’s forests with satellite imagery, detect changes in forest cover in near-real-time, and make this information freely available to anyone with Internet access.

Character assassination - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Character assassination - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For living individuals targeted by character assassination attempts, this may result in being rejected by his community, family, or members of his or her living or work environment. Such acts are often difficult to reverse or rectify, and the process is likened to a literal assassination of a human life.

Venezuela Under Attack Again

FEBRUARY 17, 2014 Ecnomic SabotageVenezuela Under Attack Againby MARIA PAEZ VICTOR

Again, a highly organized attack is being carried out against the democratic and popular government of Venezuela. It has involved monetary manipulations, economic sabotage, international media campaign against the economy despite excellent economic indicators, defaming the state run oil company, and this last week riots on the streets that have left 3 dead and 66 injured.

The tactics are the same that the un-democratic opposition has tried for 15 years ever since the first election of President Hugo Chávez. Such tactics have been used in the so-called Rainbow Revolutions in Eastern Europe, Libya, in Syria, in Egypt and now in Ukraine. The object is to give a semblance of chaos, to provoke the forces of public order, to discredit the government through the compliant international media, to foster civil unrest, even civil war (as it successfully happened in Syria), and ultimately to promote conditions for international intervention and even occupation.

However, Venezuela is not in the Middle nor Near East and its government is a participatory democracy that enjoys a very strong majority, the backing of all key institutions under the rule of law, and the support of its regional neighbors. Furthermore, the population is linked to many organized community groupings, it is not an amorphous mass.

The stakes are high because the country has the largest known oil reserves and these are a stone’s throw from Washington.

Europe Economy

Venezuela now has knowledge that people are conspiring to attack the government. There has been riots in the streets leaving 3 dead and 60 injured. This nation has the largest oil reserves and the stakes are high. This is economic because it involves state controlled trade which is the oil.

The Turkish authorities’ move today to block access to YouTube on the eve of Sunday’s elections, and not long after they restricted access to Twitter, smacks of a wider pre-meditated crackdown on freedom of expression, Amnesty International said.

Rape and sexual assaults in the military need more than 'kangaroo court' justice

Rape and sexual assaults in the military need more than 'kangaroo court' justice | Venezuela Expressions For Liberty & Human Rights | Scoop.it

The foreign secretary, William Hague, has called for an end to the use of sexual violence in war as part of the fine and timely crusade he has taken up alongside movie star Angelina Jolie. An inquest into the death of corporal Anne-Marie Ellement, a military policewoman who killed herself in 2011 after claiming she was raped by army colleagues, has fixed a spotlight on the issue of sexual violence within the British military. Today the coroner found Ellement killed herself in part due to bullying in the army and the effects of alleged rape. It has also emerged that of 200 allegations of rape and sexual assault between 2011 and 2013 in the military, there have only been 27 convictions.

To begin to understand the British military on any level it is best to start with a round of myth busting. Let us dispense with the idea that the British military is in a meaningful sense a slightly quaint but essentially harmonious family. Healthy families do not regularly inflict acts of sexual violence upon each other, and in the British forces rapes and sexual assaults seem to have become something of a banality. No comparable professional group in the UK appears to rival the military for rates of colleague-on-colleague sexual violence. I would argue this stems from a poisonous mix of unchallenged sexism, unaccountable power and an archaic military justice system.

One need not stoop to abstract identity politics to see that women are routinely diminished, downtrodden and sexualised out here in the real world. Yet in the military they are demeaned far more intensely. The general army consensus runs roughly as follows: despite the decorative value of certain specimens, "birds" are physically weak, consistently stupid and ditzy, and prone to skiving off physical training by claiming they have women problems. They can also smell nice, which is very distracting, and they talk excessively and won't put out when required. All of which leaves a young warrior wondering what the point of having them around actually is?

Bear in mind that I say this after serving in a corps that actually contained women. Many military units do not. Does this kind of attitude lend itself to a culture of sexual violence? I would suggest it does. This kind of ingrained prejudice also goes some way to explaining the findings of a leaked 2012 survey of army personnel in which, quite regardless of rank, every female questioned said they had been a victim of sexual harassment. If we then add unaccountable power – the very stuff the military runs on – into the mix, the picture gets even bleaker.

Russia under Attack

Russia under Attack | Venezuela Expressions For Liberty & Human Rights | Scoop.it

In a number of my articles I have explained that the Soviet Union served as a constraint on US power. The Soviet collapse unleashed the neoconservative drive for US world hegemony.

Russia under Putin, China, and Iran are the only constraints on the neoconservative agenda. Its nuclear missiles and military technology make Russia the strongest military obstacle to US hegemony.

To neutralize Russia, Washington broke the Reagan-Gorbachev agreements and expanded NATO into former constituent parts of the Soviet Empire and now intends to bring former constituent parts of Russia herself–Georgia and Ukraine–into NATO.
