TV and movie viewing on tablets by older Americans is quickly rising, according to a new study. The number of tablet owners 55 and older who watch TV and movies weekly on tablets increased from 11 percent last year to 19 percent in 2012, while the number of tablet owners in the 45 to 54 age range who watch weekly rose from 15% to 24%, said strategy consulting firm Altman Vilandrie & Company, based on an online survey conducted in partnership with Research Now.

As it happens, the day after that landmark day in social media history, two companies made some social media news of their own. Digit Media released its NextGuide TV program listings app for the iPad, available on the iTunes store, and Kit Digital unveiled the latest version of its social program guide (SPG). The two companies have somewhat different takes on this space.

The online video business might be enjoying a record number of viewers, but the number of ads seen hasn’t returned yet to the highs hit in the spring. In comScore’s just-released monthly report on video viewing, the measurement firm said a record 188 million Americans watched 37.7 billion online videos in August. That’s a rise from 184 million Americans checking out online videos in July.

As brands struggle to identify the value and connections of Facebook Fans, engineers and developers at social media sharing, advertising and data companies like AddThis and Optimal have started to figure it out. The graph highlights keywords, along with the percentage of gender demographic, reach in the U.S., cost per click, and average age. For example, the graph tells us that on Facebook those interested in Tesla Motors represent 79% males around age 34.6. Brands have an option to reach about 34,660 people at a cost of 69 cents per click. The position of words on the page represents the link between topics. The graph moves to help marketers better understand the relationships between words.
