Non-animal photosafety assessment approaches for cosmetics based on the photochemical and photobiochemical properties

Non-animal photosafety assessment approaches for cosmetics based on the photochemical and photobiochemical properties | Veille collaborative | Scoop.it

The main purpose of the present study was to establish a non-animal photosafety assessment approach for cosmetics using in vitro photochemical and photobiochemical screening systems. Fifty-one cosmetics, pharmaceutics and other chemicals were selected as model chemicals on the basis of animal and/or clinical photosafety information. The model chemicals were assessed in terms of photochemical properties by UV/VIS spectral analysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay and 3T3 neutral red uptake phototoxicity testing (3T3 NRU PT). Most phototoxins exhibited potent UV/VIS absorption with molar extinction coefficients of over 1000 M−1cm−1, although false-negative prediction occurred for 2 cosmetic phototoxins owing to weak UV/VIS absorption. Among all the cosmetic ingredients, ca. 42% of tested chemicals were non-testable in the ROS assay because of low water solubility; thereby, micellar ROS (mROS) assay using a solubilizing surfactant was employed for follow-up screening. Upon combination use of ROS and mROS assays, the individual specificity was 88.2%, and the positive and negative predictivities were estimated to be 94.4% and 100%, respectively. In the 3T3 NRU PT, 3 cosmetics and 4 drugs were incorrectly predicted not to be phototoxic, although some of them were typical photoallergens. Thus, these in vitro screening systems individually provide false predictions; however, a systematic tiered approach using these assays could provide reliable photosafety assessment without any false-negatives. The combined use of in vitro assays might enable simple and fast non-animal photosafety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients.

Co-Curation: New Strategies, Roles, Services, and Opportunities for Libraries in the Post-Web Era and the Digital Media Context : Libri

Scientific Information's insight:

The author reasons that libraries need to expand their traditional services in the Post-Web Era. A library’s core values are reflected in the convenience it brings to users for quick access and consumption of content. The traditional value chain of libraries (acquisitions - catalog - discovery and access-based services) significantly lags behind the current times, and thus can no longer effectively serve the library’s core values. It is critical for libraries to amend the value chain at the point of content use (acquisitions - catalog - discovery and access-based services - use). The new value chain incorporates co-curation services between library staff and users and among users themselves. Not only does the author discuss the significance for such an extension, but he also demonstrates possible new roles for libraries in content utilization through an innovative project of the Emory University Libraries, Readux (Read Edit Annotation Digital User Experience). By enabling co-curation (read, annotate, describe, collaborate, share, import, export, and publish), libraries will create new opportunities to support users and themselves in the digital media context.

More than a desire for text

Scientific Information's insight:

Why and on what bases do people choose content and share it in an online environment? At the centre of Henry Jenkins’ theory of convergence culture lie in the transforming links between active, participative audiences, media content and media corporations. However, the ‘textually motivated’ desire to participate in the circulation of and control over texts is just one among other key motives for the dissemination and recirculation of content. Ethnography-based research conducted at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic suggests that when exploring participation in textuality, performative self-exposure and self-presentation must be taken into account as well as the context of audiences’ everyday life. Thus, I propose to approach participation as based not only on a ‘will to text’ but also on a dialectical relationship between a ‘will to self-performance’ and a ‘will to conformity’. These three factors then impact on the social curation of content – a reflexive process in which members of the audience construct texts for consumption and recirculation.

Current Challenges in Bioequivalence, Quality, and Novel Assessment Technologies for Topical Products - Springer

Current Challenges in Bioequivalence, Quality, and Novel Assessment Technologies for Topical Products - Springer | Veille collaborative | Scoop.it
Scientific Information's insight:

This paper summarises the proceedings of a recent workshop which brought together pharmaceutical scientists and dermatologists from academia, industry and regulatory agencies to discuss current regulatory issues and industry practices for establishing therapeutic bioequivalence (BE) of dermatologic topical products. The methods currently available for assessment of BE were reviewed as well as alternatives and the advantages and disadvantages of each method were considered. Guidance on quality and performance of topical products was reviewed and a framework to categorise existing and alternative methods for evaluation of BE was discussed. The outcome of the workshop emphasized both a need for greater attention to quality, possibly, via a Quality-By-Design (QBD) approach and a need to develop a “whole toolkit” approach towards the problem of determination of rate and extent in the assessment of topical bioavailability. The discussion on the BE and clinical equivalence of topical products revealed considerable concerns about the variability present in the current methodologies utilized by the industry and regulatory agencies. It was proposed that academicians, researchers, the pharmaceutical industry and regulators work together to evaluate and validate alternative methods that are based on both the underlying science and are adapted to the drug product itself instead of single “universal” method.

« Le pluriel ne vaut rien à l’homme, et sitôt qu’on est plus quatre, on est une bande de cons », chantait Brassens. Un expert de la mise en réseau vient contredire le poète. En partant d’une large pratique de groupes de réflexion appuyés sur les outils numériques, le directeur scientifique de la Fing montre comment le nombre peut faire intelligence.

This table lists the machine-readable file formats that can be exported from reference managers. These are typically used to share data with other reference managers or with other people who use a reference manager. To exchange data from one program to another, the first program must be able to export to a format that the second program may import.

Curation, curation, curation

Curation, curation, curation | Veille collaborative | Scoop.it
Scientific Information's insight:

The media curation craze has spawned a multitude of new sites that help users to collect and share web content. Some market themselves as spaces to explore a common interest through different types of related media. Others are promoted as a means for creating and sharing stories, or producing personalized newspapers. Still others target the education market, claiming that curation can be a powerful learning tool for web-based content. But who really benefits from the curation task: the content curator or the content consumer? This paper will argue that for curation to fully support learning, on either side, then the curation site has to allow the content curator to research and tell stories through their selected content and for the consumer to rewrite the story for themselves. This brings the curation task inline with museum practice, where museum professionals tell stories through careful selection, organization and presentation of objects in an exhibition, backed up by research. This paper introduces the notion of 'recuration' to describe a process in which shared content can be used as part of learning.

The curated web: A recommendation challenge (Conference Paper)

Scientific Information's insight:

In this paper we consider the application of content-based recommendation techniques to web curation services which allow users to curate and share topical collections of content (e.g. images, news, web pages etc.). Curation services like Pinterest are now a mainstay of the modern web and present a range of interesting recommendation challenges. In this paper we consider the task of recommending collections to users and evaluate a range of different content-based techniques across a variety of content signals. We present the results of a large-scale evaluation using data from the Scoop.it1 web page curation service
