Shibboleth Authentication Request

Maddie Muth's insight:

Mann, Jim. "Vegetarian Diets." British Medical Journal 339.7720 (2009): 525-26. JSTOR. Web. 27 Mar. 2013.

This article compares meat diets vs non meat diets. Jim Mann uses facts from studies to show the benefits that a vegetarian diet can have on the body and also some misconceptions with the diet, such as vegetarians live longer. He objectively shows the facts between the two. This is a reliable source because it was published in the British Medical Journal. It relates to diet and health and so the British Medical Journal wouldn't publish something that was not true. In my argument I would be able to use this source to show some of the benefits a vegetarian can have on a person. In the considering another side paper I could also use this article to show the misconceptions people have about the diet.

The entire website is devoted to informing people about vegan and vegetarian diets. There are options for education, recipes, books, etc. This is a reliable source because all of the information on this website is made to inform not convince so it is unbaised and is a source solely for information. I can use this in my paper so explain what it means to be a vegetarian.

An organization's website, like this one, is typically not a good source for an academic essay because organization website often seek to recruit new members or present one view in order benefit through action or influence. If the source mentions data, you may be able to find the original research. The commentary might be valuable here.

A vegetarian diet provides adequate nutrition to adults and children and can also reduce health problems, a study has found
Maddie Muth's insight:

Newscore. "Vegetarian Diet Provides Good Nutrition, Health Benefits, Study Finds."Fox News. FOX News Network, 04 June 2012. Web. 27 Mar. 2013. <http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/06/04/vegetarian-diet-provides-good-nutrition-health-benefits-study-finds/>.

This article is made to show that vegetarians do get enough nutrients even though they refrain from eating meat. The diet is good for the planet and also those that eat this way have less of a risk to develop cancer or type to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc. This is a good source because it comes from a news site. That being said it is also a little biased because all of the media is. I can use this in my paper to show that lack of nutrition shouldn't be a problem when considering to stop eating meat.

From a nutritional standpoint this could be an important source, but since it is just reporting on the Australian team's research, you are better off reading the original research and using that as your source, especially since some readers may be discouraged by a popular news source such as this.
