Is Your Chocolate Real? Cacao vs Cocoa: What You Need To Know...

Is Your Chocolate Real? Cacao vs Cocoa: What You Need To Know... | Vegetarian and Vegan | Scoop.it
Are you actually eating real chocolate? The disappointing answer is most likely not. However it's actually easy to tell - if you know what to look for.

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, January 22, 7:52 PM

Did you know there's a huge nutritional difference between dark cacao and cocoa?  Dark cacao is the antioxidant boosting raw unrefined chocolate, the one with all the vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Cocoa, is the processed refined chocolate with little of the dark cacao and usually contains sugar.

Which one would you rather have for your body? As usual food manufacturers  often falsely advertise the cocoa as healthy when it's definitely not. Be aware and read labels. You want to read the words "raw, unrefined, GMO free with no sugar".

Health Tips:  Dark cacao comes in powder and as cacao beans. When you buy chocolate bars, check to see how high the cacao is. You want at least 85%. The problem is that most all these bars have evaporated cane sugar in the ingredients. Try to find ones without any sugar or other sweeteners.

You know you can make your own delicious dark chocolate. Use raw organic cacao butter, extra virgin raw coconut butter, and grade B maple syrup. Chocolate never tasted so good. Use this chocolate for your real hot cocoa with coconut milk.

Did you know that dark green leafy veggies, alliums (garlic, onions), and cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, arugula,  Brussels sprouts) are three of the very best cancer fighting plant based real whole food ingredients that you you want to include in your weekly meal plans? Consuming any plant based real whole food rich in fiber, nutrient dense, and detoxifying will make a huge difference for your over all health.

Health Tips:  If you're relatively healthy and fit, and already eating plant based, you might want to consider eating two meals a day stretched out over six or more hours.  Eat an early lunch or brunch and then have your dinner later. You can fill up on filtered water when you wake until your first meal. then drink more filtered water between meals and a few hours before bedtime.

When you consume plant based ingredients, you're already getting all your antioxidants, vitamins, minerals which give you plenty of energy and help you feel lighter. These are the anti-inflammatory foods. If you want or feel you need to take supplements, you can always do so. Vitamin D, the B complex, and magnesium are recommended.

If you're still making changes to your food regimen, add more plant based ingredients and less of the animal based and processed food, which are pro-inflammatory.  You'll feel and look better.

Did you know that there are many healthy foods which may be new to you and some that are not that you will read about this year? You can try adding a new food into your daily regimen as a swap for a food you may want to discontinue consuming. Some of these foods may be good for the climate, but just not as good for your body. Make wise choices for what works for you.

Health tips:  Add loads of organic greens, veggies, legumes (aka pulses), nuts, seeds, some ancient grains, and some fruits to your meals every day. These are the foods your body needs to function properly. These foods are fiber rich, will fill you up, are anti-inflammatory, are nutrient dense, contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes which your body requires to do its work.

You may not particularly like insects, but they are a necessary part of nature. Be respectful to all living beings and consider eating plants, not animals and/or insects.

17 Science-Based Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

17 Science-Based Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids | Vegetarian and Vegan | Scoop.it
Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly important for your body and brain. This article lists 17 science-based health benefits of omega-3s.

Via Sandi Cornez

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, January 24, 9:51 PM

Did you know that plant based real whole food is the best way for you to get your omega 3 fatty acids?  Essential fatty acids are fat your body cannot make, so they need to be obtained from the food you consume.

Omega 3s reduce inflammation. Alpha linoleic acid (ALA) is an omega 3 essential fatty acid (EFA). which has a positive effect on cardiovascular health, neuroprotection, anti-inflammation, and your immune system.

DHA is an essential building block of tissue and retina in the eye. It helps with brain function, including the formation of certain neural transmitters, and plays plays an important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age.

EPA is converted into hormone like substances  (prostaglandins), which regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.  DHA and EPA act as a source of energy, insulate the body against heat loss, prevent skin from drying and flaking, and cushion tissues and organs. It's important to eat all three sources of omega 3s- ALA, DHA, EPA.

Are you aware that most people in the U.S. eat too many omega 6s which are pro-inflammatory? When you eat more than four times the amount of omega 6s to omega 3s, you tend to create excess inflammation.

Health Tips:  Omega 6 fats are mostly found in animal and processed food. Omega 3 fats are found in dark leafy greens, flax, chia, and hemp seeds, and certain types of algae. Omega 3 fats can also be found in smaller amounts in fruit and non green veggies. Winter squash has a high concentration of (ALA)

Consuming greens, edible weeds like purslane, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and lots of flax, chia, hemp seeds contains a good amount of omega 3s. Healthy fats help lower blood glucose and insulin resistance.

Plant based sources of high in DHA and EPA are blue-green algae which are rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. You don't need to toxic fish. Just eat what the fish eat to get your DHA/EPA: sea veggies, plankton, and algae, and cyanobacteria.

You can also purchase online vegan sources of DHA/EPA. The more plant based you buy, the more companies will provide sources.

Did you know that the dietary factor best able to boost DNA repair is citrus fruit? "Within two hours of consuming citrus, your DNA becomes significantly more resistant to damage". This information comes from Dr Michael Greger's new book, "How Not to Die:".

Health Tips:  eat whole fruit as opposed to juices, except for green juices. Are you aware that drinking orange juice every morning may increase skin cancer risk? Adding zest to your meals increases the benefits and provides a flavorful taste. Freeze your lemons, limes, and oranges to make it easier to grate for the zest.

Do check with your doctor if you're taking prescription meds, as grapefruit can suppress the enzymes that help clear drugs and less drug clearance means higher levels in your body. Higher levels can increase side effects of drugs.

Did you know that when you adopt a true plant based real whole food regimen without consuming any processed food and stop eating bread, the weight will just fall off? Try it and find out for yourself. You'll wonder why you didn't always eat this way.

You'll have so much energy, no brain fog, little if any joint issues, and a zest for life because you're consuming anti-inflammatory food. You'll discover what real food was meant to taste like.

Health Tips:  For those of  you who just can't find the time to cook daily meals, you can either cook your meals on the weekend and freeze into convenient take out packages or you can buy the least processed organic veggie based main dish you like and add a can of beans or other vegetable based protein to it, make a salad, eat a piece for fruit for dessert and you have dinner.

Remember to keep moving and drink filtered water throughout your day. Get at least 7-9 hours quality sleep each night. Be mindful of the lovely food, your companions at the meal, and remember to chew each bite at least 30 times slowly.  Chewing carefully and consuming food slowly has a direct bearing on how well your digestion works
