How Twitter Made Me A Better Teacher - Edudemic

How Twitter Made Me A Better Teacher - Edudemic | 21st Century Classrooms | Scoop.it

In short, Twitter has made it possible for me to connect with people I never would have been able to meet had I remained within my school and community. It has substantially more interaction than any webinar or article, and also is fantastic for keeping up to date with the latest ideas and theories in education. At first it was difficult. After joining I had no followers, and also followed no one. It takes some time to start developing your PLN (professional/personal learning network). If you want to create a haven for professional development, it’s important that you are critical about the people you include in your list. You want to add the ones who can bring something to your table; the ones who are willing to share and interact with you and others.

Derrick Senior's insight:

One word..."Wow!"

I guess it is never too late. I just discovered Twitter (and TweetDeck). I kept my distance because I feared iot would take up too much of my time. In fact it seems the opposite is true. My ability to conect and learn is vastly improving because of these tools.

Born to Rise: A Story of Children and Teachers Reaching Their Highest Potential

Born to Rise: A Story of Children and Teachers Reaching Their Highest Potential

~ Deborah Kenny (author) More about this product
List Price: $25.99
Price: $18.73
You Save: $7.26 (28%)

Born to Rise is the inspiring account of Deborah Kenny’s pursuit of social justice for our nation’s most vulnerable children. Students enter Harlem Village Academies, the network of charter schools Kenny founded, several years behind grade level, but in just a few years they are transformed, ranking among the highest in the nation. How did they do it? For the first time, Kenny reveals the secret to creating a powerful workplace culture that attracts the most talented people and brings out their passion and highest performance

Derrick Senior's insight:

I found my next read.

From Laurie Fabiano: "There are many things I love about Deborah's book, but perhaps the one thing I appreciate most is how she talks about and treats teachers. In today's polarized society her view that teachers are to be both empowered and held accountable is refreshing. Teaching is perhaps the most important profession, yet for too long we've not given teachers the respect and the freedom they deserve. They are creative professionals and need to be treated that way. Deborah articulates this point beautifully, but what makes it resonate is that the great success of Harlem Village Academies is predicated on this belief. Send this book to every educator you know."

Getting beyond "teacher leadership light"

Getting beyond "teacher leadership light" | 21st Century Classrooms | Scoop.it

Growing cadres of highly visible teacher leaders, anchored by the respect that parents and the public have for them, can create powerful ways for those who teach to lead, and not just be led. (This thing called the Internet will help a great deal.

We also highlight evidence that successful schools require dynamic collaboration that extends far beyond traditional “anoint and appoint” forms of teacher leadership.

There's a lot more talk these days about teacher leadership than in years past. In our new book, Teacherpreneurs: Innovative Teachers Who Lead but Don't Leave, we point to the growing complexity of preparing all students for the future—in which innovation will play a major part.

We also highlight evidence that successful schools require dynamic collaboration that extends far beyond traditional “anoint and appoint” forms of teacher leadership.

Today’s young people know knowledge is like manure — it only really works when it is spread around.

So how will you use your current and future knowledge?

Will you listen to the words of Noam Chomsky, who tells us that “knowledge is not enough?” Will your knowledge turn to action, or will it sit in a steaming pile, warming one small space on Earth?

My teaching will have been in vain if my students remain silent in the face of injustice.

My teaching will have been in vain if they come away with a deeper critique that leaves you in stasis.

Will they “disturb the peace?”

Derrick Senior's insight:

An inspiring article about taking action.

Selin Gelinci's curator insight, October 31, 2013 11:40 AM

This is a useful resource as  it explores further into the framework for the 21st century learning. It combines a discrete focus on the outcomes, specific skillsa and content knowledge that should be gained through the learning program. The diagram helps understanding further into the support system and how it all collaborates. This is benefical to me as a future teacher as it gives me a clear understanding of how i can manage my time effectively and make sure i am always covering aspects that are relevant to the 21st century learning.

The 21st Century Principal: How to Become a Connected Educator: Developing an Effective PLN

The 21st Century Principal: How to Become a Connected Educator: Developing an Effective PLN | 21st Century Classrooms | Scoop.it

According to Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and Lani Ritter Hall, “Teachers must learn to model connectedness and enable students to develop personal learning networks, made up of people and resources from both their physical and virtual worlds---but first, teachers must become connected collaborators themselves.” With that, in their book The Connected Educator: Learning and Leading in a Digital Age, Nussbaum-Beach and Hall introduce the idea of the teacher-modeler of connectedness, and throughout their book, they tell educators how to become a “connected educator.”

Whose Profession is This Anyway? | CTQ | 21st Century Classrooms | Scoop.it

What’s been most amazing about this particular gathering is the willingness on the part of the staff to stay out of the way, and let us teacher leaders actually make decisions about which way the organization should go. You have to have been a classroom teacher and know how ignored and humiliated we have been in the educational decision-making process to appreciate how unique this is.

Teachers as authentic school leaders and innovators. Could this be the next big shift?

Now the time has come for NEW INNOVATION: "First:  Simplicity of Set UP. The user could take the computer out of the box, plug it in, and be ready to go." Steve Jobs

The design of the product comes first, the development of the hardware had to follow to fit the design, never the other way around. Design goes into the very inner workings of a device.
