Why Social Media Is Like The Telephone Circa 1915 | VCE Technology and Communication | Scoop.it
[caption id=
Louise Robinson-Lay's insight:

This article discusses a book about the advent of the telephone and likens the reactions to the new invention as similar to those surrounding social media sites like twitter and Facebook. It is an interesting look at how regardless of time and geography, humans can be skeptical about new things. You might choose to look at a historical communications device (drums?) and see how people may have reacted.

Alex Asquith's comment, September 18, 2013 4:10 PM
Instagram is becoming a "modelling agency" for individuals. People take pictures of themselves trying to look the best that they can. This has effected a lot of the teens because they are all trying to get themselves into a certain body shape and look. This is leading to a rise in many issues within society such as eating disorders, extreme exercise and sexual dysfunction as people are not comfortable in their body unless they are similar to the others that are posting on Instagram. This is mainly affecting girls but boys are also being affected by being exposed to advertising saying that you need to be lean and muscular to be good.

Human evolution: the next stages

Dean Burnett: If the modern world remains constant for long enough, human evolution could take some bizarre turns
Louise Robinson-Lay's insight:

Some interesting theories about where evolution, fueled by technology, could take us. some of these are humourous and very tongue in cheek, but, who knows, some of them may make sense!

One of your writing tasks is to respond to ideas about how technology affects our communication skills. You could use some of the ideas here when writing about that. You do need to make some hypotheses about the future in this Context and you are to read this article as part of that task.

Let’s Be Real: Online Harassment Isn’t ‘Virtual’ For Women

Let’s Be Real: Online Harassment Isn’t ‘Virtual’ For Women | VCE Technology and Communication | Scoop.it
In January 2006, I was a student at NYU School of Law, home for holiday break. I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out.
Louise Robinson-Lay's insight:

Strong language warning.

this piece shares what it can feel like to be the victim of online harassment. The author shares her story and relates how it felt at the time. One of the issues with the online world is not simply that people can abuse you but that they can do so anonymously and this, for some, seems to remove any restraints that they may normally use even when insulting others. In other words, people busing others online seem more vitriolic and offensive than they would be in person. When they abuse women, in particular, they often threaten sexual violence in graphic terms; not normally something someone would say to you in person. This may be one of the issues you choose to write about for your Context piece.

Telephone History Social Reaction

We need to think about the history of telecommunications as well. When the telephone was invented there was a reaction against it as much as many saw it as beneficial. If you want to look at historical reactions to new inventions in communications this site may be a good place to begin. You may choose to write a story, article or persuasive piece about the invention of a historical (or even hypothetical) communications device.
