The Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) is the largest native Australian freshwater fish species, and is probably the most iconic.

Endangered species conservation strategies do not always include establishment of reserves. Regulation of water flow and fishing, habitat improvements and pest management are bringing this IUCN critically endangered species back from the brink.

Whilst lighting the gas was a political stunt, the problem of gas leaks, pollution of aquifers and habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation in the Pillaga is a real one. Despite this, law seems to be on the side of the polluters.
