Windows 8 UX designer on Metro: "It is the antithesis of a power user" - Neowin

Windows 8 UX designer on Metro: "It is the antithesis of a power user" - Neowin | UX feed | Scoop.it
Windows 8 UX designer talks about the decisions behind the Metro interface, as well as why they were made, and why its a necessary evil that power users must endure.
Peter Zalman's insight:

"Whatever feature we wanted to add into Windows, it had to be something that was simple enough for casual users to not get confused with, but also not dumbed down enough to be useless to power users. "

Some good stats on China and the growing internet consumer.

You should generally put your company/team as close as possible to where your customers are, China of course offers some very interesting temptations though for startups.

If you'd like some advice on this interesting but difficult market, come talk to 4D Pipeline. I've been part of one mainland China based startup and my cofounder Tyler has lived and worked in China for many years.

How Companies Can Prevent User Backlash After a Redesign - UX Movement

How Companies Can Prevent User Backlash After a Redesign - UX Movement | UX feed | Scoop.it
Have you ever visited a website you loved and found that everything on the user interface has changed? When a company wants to improve their website experience for their users, they redesign the interface.
Peter Zalman's insight:

“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” should come to mind when you’re thinking about a redesign. Too many companies are blindly redesigning their sites without knowing what’s broken.

It’s Over For Paid Apps, With A Few Exceptions

It’s Over For Paid Apps, With A Few Exceptions | UX feed | Scoop.it
Is it over for paid mobile apps? That's the general thinking these days, as the App Stores fill up with "good enough" alternatives to paid apps, while major publishers game the charts with free offerings that make millions which can then be used...

Via Jed Fisher

Jed Fisher's curator insight, October 3, 2013 4:00 PM

Gone are the days of writing a simple App/Game and charging $1 for it to make a million...

The App Store is now incredibly competitive and the biggest challenge is route to market and just being found.

Even when your App is found it's hard to charge for it. One, people now expect and want "free", and two, because of the very nature of an App. i.e. An App should solve a single serve need, i.e. do one thing (point solution) really well.

The challenge from a business model point of view is it's hard to charge for this and hard to defend against (someone else doing the same thing).

So instead aim to solve a *complete* customer workflow (or workflows), this is valuable, this is significant. To do this however often (not always) requires more than just an App, it requires a platform of sorts. The advantage of doing all this work is it opens the door for different business models (SaaS, etc) and is also easier to defend against.

As always, the best rule of thumb is to *solve a customer need*. If you do this, you can make money from it. Guaranteed.

A Brilliant In-Car Touchscreen Interface You Never Need To Look At

Touchscreen displays in our cars aren't going away anytime soon. So designer Matthaeus Krenn figured that now was as good a time as any to radically improve their interfaces, replacing grids of ugly buttons and options with an elegant and minimal multi-touch UI ---that the driver doesn't need to look at.

We've moved to touchscreen but have started going backwards - creating button intensive complex interfaces. Gestures are our friends! Here is a lovely example of re-imagining car touchscreens.
