Form-Field Validation: The Errors-Only Approach | Smashing UX Design

Form-Field Validation: The Errors-Only Approach | Smashing UX Design | Expertiential Design | Scoop.it
Error pages for form-field validation are dreadful. You’ve just filled out 20 form fields, yet you get the same bloated page thrown back in your face because a single field failed to validate.

This is a good article on form-field validation. The author starts with an example form and then walks the reader through alternate methods of validation and what each of them address, enhance, or 'fix'. The title refers to a model that displays only the fields that are in error to the user after submitting the form. My personal favorite it the last method which give the user text hints and feedback as they are filling out the form. Not a form expert yet? If Christian Holst keeps writing pieces like this we soon will be. And true to all the well written articles - the comments are as informative as the article so don't forget to pursue them as well.

Yes, more responsive design tidbits! As we try to find best practices to share content across multiple devices a lot of discussion will occur on the means as well. Responsive design is a concept many support as a solution, but that is not to say it does not have its trade-offs. This article, written by James Chudley, looks at the options available for making images responsive and some of their merits or drawbacks. And don't forget the comments. This has sparked some good conversation.

The answer is 5, except when it's not. Most arguments for using more test participants are wrong, but some tests should be bigger and some smaller.

Why Your Links Should Never Say “Click Here”

Why Your Links Should Never Say “Click Here” | Expertiential Design | Scoop.it
Have you ever wanted your users to click your links, but didn’t know how to get them to act? When some designers run into this problem they’re tempted to use the words click here on their links.

If you are not getting the desired results from you sites call to action the first thing to examine is button placement and the language used for the label. Button placement and the use of the correct label may seem minor but it is often the single biggest thing stopping your visitor from taking action. I still have clients who want to put the "OK" button on the left. Tracking shows the human eye scans on a diagonal from top left to bottom right. Putting the button to complete the desired result on the right maps to this behavior. Anthony of UX Movement also included useful information about button labels and text links found in content areas. This article is information rich and a quick read!
