Better User Experience With Storytelling - Part One | Smashing UX Design

Better User Experience With Storytelling - Part One | Smashing UX Design | UX Design Process | Scoop.it
Today we communicate a bit differently. Our information is fragmented across various mass-media channels and delivered through ever-changing technology. It has become watered down, cloned, and is churned out quickly in 140-character blurbs. We’ve lost that personal touch where we find an emotional connection that makes us care.

Using storytelling, however, we can pull these fragments together into a common thread. We can connect as real people, not just computers. In this article we’ll explore how user experience professionals and designers are using storytelling to create compelling experiences that build human connections.

What Is User Experience Design? Overview, Tools And Resources | Smashing UX Design

What Is User Experience Design? Overview, Tools And Resources | Smashing UX Design | UX Design Process | Scoop.it
The good, the bad, the ugly. A great overview on UX!

Websites and Web applications have become progressively more complex as our industry's technologies and methodologies advance. What used to be a one-way static medium has evolved into a very rich and interactive experience.

NOT THE SAME THING AS USABILITY
User experience and usability have become synonymous, but these two fields are clearly distinct. UX addresses how a user feels when using a system, while usability is about the user-friendliness and efficiency of the interface.

This guide aims to familiarize you with the professional discipline of UX design in the context of Web-based systems such as websites and applications.

- what is UX?
- why is UX important
- UX design is not one size fits all
- criticisms of UX as a profession
- tasks and techniques of a UX designer
- tools of the trade
- websites about UX

... And if that doesn't clear it up for you, there's further reading links at the end.

The Big Think: Breaking The Deliverables Habit - Smashing UX Design

The Big Think: Breaking The Deliverables Habit - Smashing UX Design | UX Design Process | Scoop.it

For a UX Strategist, "It’s not about deliverables. It’s about results." By cutting the load down to what's most essential and useful: the interaction model, "We focus strictly on the end result" says, Robert Hoekman Jr. author of this excellent read.

He spurs a great discussion by stating, "too many deliverables can distill a design project down to a goods-and-services agreement," but offers an alternative process that consists of a: Strategy Document, Activity Requirements, Sketches and Comp & Code.

Usability ROI and the Art of Communication

Usability ROI and the Art of Communication | UX Design Process | Scoop.it

Christijan Draper makes a case for why usability testing is an essential process in design.

” … spending 10% of your development budget on usability should improve your conversion rate by 83%.”

The results of this study shows the unquestionable value of investing a good portion of the budget in usability testing.

Yet, Even though terms like “user-centered design” and “user experience” are now in the vocabulary of most people working on Web sites, relatively few designers, developers, stakeholders, managers, and check-signers—who all have a hand in the design process—have actually spent any time watching how people use Web sites. As a result, we end up designing for our abstract idea of users, based for the most part on ourselves.”

Web Form Design Patterns: Sign-Up Forms | Smashing UX Design

Web Form Design Patterns: Sign-Up Forms | Smashing UX Design | UX Design Process | Scoop.it
If you want to maximize the revenue of your service you need to maximize completion rates of your web forms.

Where should the link to the form be placed in the layout? How should we design it? How should we highlight the labels and how should we align them? How do web form design patterns look like in modern web-sites? These were exactly the questions we’ve asked ourselves. And to get the answers we’ve conducted a survey.

The main objective of the survey was to provide designers and developers with some intuition of how effective web forms are designed in practice; we also wanted to present some guidelines of how a user-friendly web form can be achieved.

Stop Designing Mobile Websites | Psychology of Web Design | 3.7 Blog | UX Design Process | Scoop.it
Don't think mobile… think universal.

UNIVERSAL WEB DESIGN
The idea behind universal web design is simple. Design a site such that the largest amount of people can access it and have a positive experience. This means the site should be easy to use regardless of device, technology, context and situation. This idea is nothing new, in fact it has existed for decades and accessibility experts have been preaching it since day one. I don’t even feel the concept needs more explaining.
