UX isn’t black nor white. It’s grey and that’s ok. — Medium

UX isn’t black nor white. It’s grey and that’s ok. — Medium | UX Design and Leadership Career Guide | Scoop.it
In his recent post called “Why UX designers don’t exist” Timur K.
Terry Patterson's insight:

This morning I ran across an article that makes a bold statement about UX designers. Sadly, the argument in the article had a lot of flaws having to do with what a UX designer does. There was a quick critique of the article that highlighted most of these flaws, but my favorite summary was this one. The author of this quick post understands that a UX designer makes sure the needs are met in every aspect of what a system exists for.

There was only one thing in the original article that I agreed with, that is that ux work is never done in isolation. Whoever says that they "designed an entire system by themselves" and everything was "perfect" from the start applying principles "they know" and without user feedback and testing is not a true UX designer.

Terry Patterson's insight:

The section of the guide that I found most interesting is, Outdated UX Patterns, a collection of examples of what not to do when building a website, which tries to steer designers from borrowing from ineffective practices to solve common problems.

How Much UX have You Put into Your UX Portfolio?

How Much UX have You Put into Your UX Portfolio? | UX Design and Leadership Career Guide | Scoop.it

No matter what your UX stripe, you are most likely getting contacted nearly every week with some new enticing role. And, although the demand for UX talent far exceeds the supply, the competition for top roles at the most interesting companies is pretty fierce.

Hiring managers have high standards, and in order to respond quickly and effectively to the dream roles that cross your path, its critical to maintain a solid portfolio that you can share at a moment’s notice.

Terry Patterson's insight:

I have to be honest, my portfolio does not show as much UX work I have done. Perhaps I have to start capturing the nuggets I need to capture to show the process because as a manager, that is what I would like to see from a UX designer, his/her process.

So, You're a Web Designer, Right? | Codrops

So, You're a Web Designer, Right? | Codrops | UX Design and Leadership Career Guide | Scoop.it
What is the role of a web designer nowadays? An article about the changes that came with the awareness of responsive web design and the new workflow of designing in the browser.
Terry Patterson's insight:

I've been hearing this lately, the evolution of the web designer... coming from the ranks of graphic design without programming background and making a slow-but-surely transition to a "web of things" world. A new definition that demands an important transition to layout agility presentation coding, context-aware interactions and most importantly, a deep understanding of the inter-disciplinary nature of the design of web products. This article attempts to define the new web designer and a new design process that is necessary to become a unicorn (Jared M Spool's term for UX Generalist).

Who is who in User Experience Design? - Trinidad Consulting | UX Design and Leadership Career Guide | Scoop.it
Since a lot of our readers are often asking us about the skill sets of user experience designers, information architects, accessibility specialists and others, we decided to write a short overview of their roles in a user experience design team.
Terry Patterson's insight:

I thought this would be useful for someone who is unfamiliar with the process or just curious to see how others see ux teams.

Accreditation for UX Professionals? :: UXmatters

In an increasingly fast-changing marketplace, where commerce and the Internet are indistinguishable from one another, a growing number of jobs are going unfulfilled, and the skills that are necessary to fill them are shifting.

Terry Patterson's insight:

In this article, Chris Becker says that there is a disconnect in education for UX professionals. I think he should do a bit more research into graduate programs available in HCI that teach these skills and techniques that are completely relevant and practical for the field. I agree that higher standards are needed, and definitely progressive academic institutions that do focus on keeping up.

Non-UX Books for UX Practitioners

In discussions with a colleague about his aspirations to switch careers and dive into user experience, he asked me to recommend some UX books.  Given the frequency with which I am asked this question, I now develop some alkaline-laden frustration and a nickel taste in my mouth, and I simply grimace.

Terry Patterson's insight:

Many of us who love the UX practice have our favorite influencers. This article is fantastic! Thank you @griffopolis

What UX Design Skills Were in Demand in the UK Job Market in 2013? :: UXmatters

Whether you work directly in the field of UX design or you just have a passing interest, it’s fair to say that, in 2013, the focus on all things user experience definitely stepped up a gear. Over the last 11 months at Bubble, the UK digital jobs board for whom I work, we’ve seen a huge increase in the demand for talented UX designers right across the UK—and not just from specialist niche agencies, but from major brands like comparethemarket.com, ITV, Sainsbury’s, and The Telegraph Media Group, too.

Three Design Team Leaders on the State of UX | UX Magazine

Three Design Team Leaders on the State of UX | UX Magazine | UX Design and Leadership Career Guide | Scoop.it

For this follow-up article, I've interviewed three UX team leaders to better understand who they are, how their organizations address UX design, how they lead, and what user experience means to them.

UX has come a long way, but as you’ll read, there's still considerable room for opportunity.

Terry Patterson's insight:

I love to hear from other UX team leaders out there. It is not simply leading web engineers and designers with a UX mindset, but understanding how the designs impact the way an enterprise delivers their products and services. We can easily think of features and layouts to facilitate user experience, but it is harder to think about the entire experience and understand the bottom line for users and the bottom line for business.

Designing For Digital Products | Smashing Magazine

In digital culture, we are beginning to think of our output as products and of our clients as users. We have gotten serious about asking how to better serve users, which reflects a significant change in the designer’s skill set.
Terry Patterson's insight:

What I loved about this article was its focus on bringing out the user-centered values that all UX designers must strive for.
