A Polish author offers a manifesto (or an explanation) for a generation defined by its relationship to communication technology.
Conspiracy theories are tempting. There is something especially charming about a forged moon landing or government-backed assassination. Christopher Hitchens called them “the exhaust fumes of dem...

Envisioning Limits: Outer Space and the End of Utopia International Conference Berlin, 19-21 April 2012 If space exploration is understood as not just one of the twentieth century’s most prestigious feats of engineering, but also a central theme in period visions of the future and utopias, then how might we understand the transition from the 1960s to the 1970s, with its emphasis on reduced possibilities and limitations to progress? The conference aims to shift the focus away from explanations of transition framed within the Cold War context and provide more nuanced narratives: from the familiar struggle between two superpowers, namely the USA and the former USSR, to distinctly West-European perspectives, and from political to socio-cultural dimensions of the Space Age. Featuring the deadly chic combination of minimalism, stark silhouette, and the ever classic black and white color palette , the extensive line of menswear exudes urban and timeless sophistication. A society not beholden to religion. A more perfect place by lessening the shame of everyday life and activities. My perfect world would be built by starting with only two principles: Freedom from religion, and seeking out the gifts of science. Many people will have difficulty accepting either of these principles because they have grown up in a society that welcomes religion and treats science as something that must be greeted skeptically. This, I think, is a holdover from the time when pseudoscience was a cause for harm and faith was the only thing that we humans had to cling to in this otherwise cruel world. By starting off with these goals in mind, it quickly follows that education must be the foundation of culture. Not wrote education, but critical thinking and analysis. These skills are currently stagnating (along with our society) and as a result, many sub cultures consider it a badge of honor to not be educated to a higher level. By stimulating intellect and educating as much of the population as possible, not only do we open the doors to greater creativity as a culture, but we open minds to the idea of accepting the HUMAN capacity to take control of our own lives and futures. Chan Koonchung's dystopian novel The Fat Years has caused an uproar in China and been translated into many languages, including a U.S. edition.
Europe – facing the extreme. I knew perfectly well that my idea was unrealistic at the time; close to cyber-utopia, a term developed by the young and prolific Evgeny Morozov in his book “The Net Delusion: How Not to Liberate The World“.
Our three-part essay on the definition of a 'post-utopian urbanism' began by surveying the four registers according to which Urbanism and Utopia share a common basis, as encoded within the modernist project for the city.

"[...] As a fiction writer, I didn’t have to look too far for my material or ponder a dystopian society a hundred years in the future to come up with a storyline. I wondered how we would react now to a catastrophic event greater than a terrorist bombing or a broken levy. [...]"
Whereas the authors of these videos paint the scenes as the ultimate utopia of sustainability and green living (minus Sprawl-ville which paints what will happen if we don't move to sustainability), the reality to me is one more of ...
The twist of Revenge is clever: the betrayed figure dies in prison, but his daughter, a young girl at the time of his imprisonment, returns, now a grown woman with an assumed identity, to their beach house (in the Hamptons, OF COURSE), to take revenge on all the high-powered business men (and their spouses) who betrayed him. What makes it escapist isn’t the revenge narrative, but the beautiful, monied background.

I’m a fan of end-of-the-world type things. Post-apocalyptic things. Conspiracy theories. Doomsday forecasts. Those signs you always see outside big cities that warn that “HELL IS WAITING” or something along those lines—I eat that stuff up. by Kristen Simmons

Unemployment: a utopia we nearly had. And so this collection of amoral speculators must be courted and placated – everything else is dismissed as "utopian".
