The shift to more digital offerings is occurring as districts in nearly every state are considering their textbook needs in light of the Common Core State Standards.

 

The push continues for school districts to move away from paper textbooks and toward digital curricula and e-textbooks. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan urged educators last year to move quickly to adopt digital textbooks and materials. Also last year, the Federal Communications Commission and the Education Department released a report, the "Digital Textbook Playbook," which provided a blueprint for schools to make the shift.

Many of today’s classrooms are designed and practiced as teaching classrooms, where the actions and learning are focused on and driven by the teacher. Teaching classrooms however, do not match the needs and expectations for 21st Century learning. Then a miracle happened. On Jan. 9, 2015, eighth-grader Vidal Chastanet popped up on the Humans of New York blog of photographer Brandon Stanton. Asked who influenced him most in life, the hoodie-wearing youth replied, “My principal, Ms. Lopez.”

“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us,” he said. “She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. She tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”

The Facebook post went viral. Stanton launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to send Mott Hall students on visits to Harvard University — which Lopez believed would inspire them. It raised $1.4 million. The White House invited Lopez and Vidal to meet President Obama.

I like to streamline and simplify how my classroom runs. I don’t keep things I don’t really need. I could still teach well with a fraction of the materials I’ve accumulated. If there is something that I need later and don’t have, I trust that I will be able to find it again, or borrow it, or be able to do without it just fine.


The foundation of my classroom is my energy, enthusiasm, and know-how, not my stuff. I feel good about clearing away the things that drain my energy and enthusiasm by creating a cluttered, disorganized work space. I can let go of things I don’t need in order to make space for things I do.

Change is uncomfortable for virtually everyone. I am the first person who will say that the process is not easy or absent of difficult challenges. The challenge of change becomes even more difficult when the main adversary is always right in front of us – our mindset. Our complex brains often work against our best intentions at times. This is Maslow’s hierarchy at play in a nutshell. Instead of taking risks, we revert back to playing it safe. As fear takes hold we forget everything and run. The fail-safe that we are made to think is protecting in nature actually holds us back from following through on implementing innovative ideas that can improve professional practice.

In the age of the Common Core, teachers like me are constantly instructed in PD sessions to differentiate our teaching to meet the needs of diverse learners and design lessons that allow students to actively engage with rigorous, standards-aligned content. Yet, time after time, the training sessions that districts provide fail to integrate the very approaches they aim to develop in teachers. It’s commonplace to walk into a session to see thirty teachers passively seated around a single presenter, checking their phones under the table or taking trips to the farthest possible bathroom to get their steps in. And to think they might miss that next PowerPoint slide or black and white handout! It’s no wonder that teachers check out during these “sage on the stage” sessions.

Learners’ use of digital tools and other technology to support their learning in our K-12 systems continues to be sporadic and often not observed despite the proliferation of use outside of school. Based on an analysis of three years of direct classroom observations in K-12 schools across 39 states and 11 countries, AdvancED found there are still relatively few classrooms in which the use of digital tools and technology is a regular part of a student’s school experience. In more than half (52.7 percent) of classrooms direct observations show no evidence students are using technology to gather, evaluate, or use information for learning; two-thirds of classrooms show no evidence of students using technology to solve problems, conduct research, or to work collaboratively.
 
Trained and certified observers conduct classroom observations as a part of AdvancED’s continuous improvement process which could include STEM Certification, accreditation, readiness and/or diagnostic review. Each observation lasts a minimum of 20 minutes during which observers use the learner-centric eProve™ Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool® (eleot®) to gather data focused on the activities learners are engaged in, their discussions and interactions, resources they are using for learning, their behaviors and dispositions during the learning process, etc. Observers rate each of the 30 eleot items on a four-point scale where 4 = Very Evident, 3 = Evident, 2 = Somewhat Evident and 1 = Not Observed

While numerous surveys suggest that the pervasive use of tablets, smartphones, laptops and digital education content in the classroom is expanding and changing the role of teachers, the AdvancED study found little evidence of technology being used by students to strengthen learning in classrooms today.

When we created our makerspace at New Milford High School many years ago we never fully realized the positive impact it would have on our learners. In a time where wood shop, metal shop, and agriculture were cut for the mere reason that the content was deemed non-essential or could not be tested something had to change. This was the reality for many schools in the Northeast. In our particular case not having trade-based courses was devastating as one third of our population was classified special needs. For all intensive purposes most of these students could care less about the curriculum, Common Core Standards, or standardized tests (i.e. PARCC). The creation and evolution of our makerspace solved this problem.
