Frank J. Papotto, Ph.D.'s curator insight, July 7, 7:39 AM

One thing that distinguishes effective organizations from less effective ones is that capacity to consistently make good decisions.  It is not simply the fact of making decisions, but the fundamental soundness of those decisions.  This suggests that while deciding what to do is important; it is how or on what basis decisions are made that is critical.

The four elements of the Empowering Effectiveness OE model  provide a good starting point for decisions: How does a particular action enhance alignment, execution, adaptation or engagement?

A bit of a fluff piece, but best soundbite is:

"The characteristics of big data are really just a magnification of those that we've been dealing with for the past twenty years in knowledge management," Beyer says. "It's not an extra special circumstance apart from normal workflow, and shouldn't be isolated. Knowledge workers are going to have to get used to it."

A useful checklist although it's more about information management than knowledge management - misses the "sharing know-how" element a bit. That being said, it suggests measuring what your organizational knowledge is worth, as well as the cost of ignorance. Interesting, but how?

Val Swisher has written yet another excellent article that gets to the heart of content. Just today, in fact, I was questioning this very topic, and not understanding why more people don't understand these basics. Read this throughly if you write or manage any content, because this article will help to boil it all down for you and get you in the right (or "write") mentality. Must, must, MUST read!
