Barbara Bray's curator insight, December 13, 2012 12:37 PM

We are being asked about this initiative and that program and how they fit with Personalized Learning. In reviewing the initiatives, we realized that there needs to be a common language that connects anything that meets the needs of each and every learner.

The discussions in the eCourse and in several of the different communities of practice keep coming back to Personalized Learning as one more initiative. Then several of the participants in the eCourse got it: Personalized Learning is the umbrella. It connects all the dots. It makes sense. We don't need one more initiative; we need to review all of the initiatives and programs under the Personalized Learning umbrella: start with the learner and how they learn best.

Barbara Bray's comment, January 24, 2013 10:07 AM
Thanks Norton!

Learning About Young Makers - User Generated Education @Jackie Gerstein

Learning About Young Makers - User Generated Education @Jackie Gerstein | Using Technology to Transform Learning | Scoop.it
I am a huge proponent of using hands-on, interactive learning activities to explore ill-defined problems as a way of teaching for all age groups. Given the spontaneity and uncertainty of these types of active learning environments, I believe educators should observe, reflect on, and analyze how learners interact with the materials, the content, the educator, and the other learners. This practice is in line with the teacher as ethnographer.

In my role as a teacher as ethnographer, I made some initial observations during my first two weeks of teaching maker education for elementary age students. With half the kids under 7, I learned a bunch about young makers.

Norton Gusky's insight:

Great insights. One that we never think about - kids like to stand while tinkering and making things. They don't like to be tethered to a chair.

H.March's curator insight, June 22, 11:25 AM

“I can’t do this.” is often a sign or signal of frustration and should not be brushed off by parents/teachers. Kids need to be in an environment that allows them to persevere and work at the problem  even multiple times, until they themselves find the solution.  The lesson they will learn is that effort will often produce positive results.

Summer of Minecraft and the Magic of Peer Mentorship | DMLcentral | Using Technology to Transform Learning | Scoop.it
One summer day when he was 12 years old, my son declared with delight that his application to join a prominent Minecraft server had been accepted. He had discovered this server through the Machinima.com “Top 5 Minecraft Creations” series, which featured the winners of challenges like building castles or gardens. He started at the bottom of the ladder in the server hierarchy, gradually earning his right to a larger plot of land, and learning from some of the best builders in the scene along the way.
