I agree Andrew. Tools are tools and it's all about how you use them that counts.
Karen Dietz's comment, July 24, 2013 1:23 PM
Good question Thomas! I think it is an ongoing dance between learning good storytelling and then learning the tools for maximum impact.
Louise Robinson-Lay's curator insight, August 2, 2013 7:44 AM

recentlyrue recently I had to get students to use Powerpoint as the Internet connection was too slow to have them all work at once on other online presentation tools. After laying down some ground rules about effective use they amazed us with their creative responses. It is not the tool. It is how you use it. And how teachers plan for it!

Getting Better at Storytelling: Creative Advice From Ira Glass

A brief film illustrates words of wisdom from the beloved host of This American Life.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 18, 2014 8:43 AM

Ira Glass, the creator and storyteller of This American Life, rocks. The stories he and his guests tell are always interesting if not down right riveting.

But here Glass is not sharing about the mechanics of how to craft a story. In this short video he talks about the creative process, how/when some people short circuit that, and encouragement to get beyond that point.

This video applies to anyone engaged in storytelling -- and anyone engaged in any creative process -- from the arts to engineering.

For storytelling, you get better at sharing stories by practicing, getting better over time, and developing a body of work. Glass hits on all these points, giving us inspiration to both embark on the journey, and to keep going.

Keep finding and telling your business stories! You will learn tons.

Karen Dietz continues to share the gems she collects and the insights that reinforce that we are and have always been storytellers.  Before written history the wisdom and history were passed down orally. Visiting here in Kauai the stories were shared/taught in movement and chant.

We are and have always been story tellers. The stories are thread that link the pearls of wisdom, knowledge, experience and insight together.

Better biz storytelling tools -- Visual Thinking Landscape + cool videos! | Using Technology in the English class | Scoop.it

Visual thinking is a way to organize your thoughts and improve your ability to think and communicate. It’s a way to expand your range and capacity by going beyond the linear world of the written word, list and spreadsheet, and entering the non-linear world of complex spacial relationships, networks, maps and diagram.

November's focus for Soical Biz is IMAGES (following the focus on Pinterest in October). There are some really helpful free tools available to help any entrepreneur, image-challenged or not, make an impact at image hungry social sites e.g. Pinterest, Facebook and Google+. There's no doubt images draw attention and drive visibility and traffic.
