Only learners do the learning! They must recognise the value of the work, because learning can be hard work at times. Unless there is a good answer to the question, 'Why does this matter?' then student engagement will struggle and thus learning will tend to struggle. Get ready teachers, because this question will become more common as a curriculum or classroom question and the answer needs to resonate with the learners.

Why Teachers Need Personalized Professional Development

Why Teachers Need Personalized Professional Development | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Competency-based or “personalized” learning allows students to master skills at their own pace with innovative support systems and new technologies. This method saves time and money and improves learners’ retention. But students are only half of the equation.

===> When teachers receive personalized professional development, everybody wins. <===

Like their students, teachers have unique strengths and needs. And when a tool can specifically cater to those needs, it empowers teachers to flex their educational muscles.

WGU's mentor-supported, competency-based, online learning model is a model of Stage 3 learning.

Nichelle Plivelic's comment, March 6, 7:57 AM
There are three main stages to personalized learning, which involves the teacher figuring out how each student learns individually and establishing goals for the students. A teacher can change the physical layout if this helps(when working with children who are easily distracted, such as those with ADHD or autism, it's best to get rid of as many distractions as possible). The student will learn at their own pace in whatever way is the most effective.

Bold leadership is about the everyday behaviors we use to build trust, focusing on the needs of others, leading with confident humility, and vulnerably engaging with our people in authentic and genuine ways.

Be BOLD!

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

Pen-And-Paper Notetaking Superior To Typing On A Laptop

Pen-And-Paper Notetaking Superior To Typing On A Laptop | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Does it make a difference if you take notes with pen and paper or on a laptop? Yes, says a new study, and laptop users are at a definite disadvantage.

News of the study comes via the Huffington Post column of Wray Herbert, one of my favorite writers on psychology. According to Herbert, psychologists Pam Mueller of Princeton and Daniel Oppenheimer of UCLA ran several related experiments aimed at evaluating how well written vs. typed notetaking helped students learn. In the first of these experiments,

” . . . college students were assigned to classrooms, some of which were equipped with laptops and others with traditional notebooks. They all listened to the same lectures, and they were specifically instructed to use their usual note-taking strategy.

Then, about half an hour after the lecture, all of the students were tested on the material covered in the lecture. Importantly, they were tested both for factual recall (How many years ago did the Indus civilization exist?) and for conceptual learning (How do Japan and Sweden differ in their approaches to social equality?).

This experiment provided preliminary evidence that laptops might be harmful to academic performance. The students using laptops were in fact more likely to take copious notes, which can be beneficial to learning.
