When Can Technology Bridge The Educational Divide?

When Can Technology Bridge The Educational Divide? | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"Gadgets and software on its own will not improve education. While 21st century technology promises to help students develop a wider, more accessible breadth of knowledge, just putting tech in our schools is not enough to "level the playing field."  Instead our structural and pedagogical realities run smack into conflict with our hopes for equitable access."

Coursework is an online platform for teacher-student online collaboration. Looks interesting though I wonder if it is 'technically' easy or challenging for educators

Well if this took off for ELT then maybe we wouldn't be needed! I think we'll be ok in the short term.

Technology Will Not Replace Teachers

Technology Will Not Replace Teachers | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it
Technology can open doors, expand minds, and change the world. That may be true, but it's not the panacea that it's been made out to be. As much innovation as the iPad may bring to the classroom, it's not going to replace a teacher anytime soon.

So yes, technology is going to play a critical role in the future of education. But not as big a role as that of a teacher.

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, October 27, 2013 8:01 PM

Indeed - good teachers are going to become even more valuablem not less.

Audrey's curator insight, November 3, 2013 2:07 PM

Absolutely true.  Technology is another way to present material which needs to be learned.   Learners will always need someone to explain information found on the iPad in the same way they do with books.

The Process Approach to Online and Blended Learning

The Process Approach to Online and Blended Learning | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"“Learning isn’t something that has to be confined to the classroom, and so as I teach blended classes, I think the more I can involve the students in learning and the more contexts I can involve them in, the more they’re going to learn,” he said. “The idea is to get them to slowly digest the information in different ways and to engage in different activities so that by the time the course comes to an end, they can apply the knowledge they have learned. That’s the ultimate goal: to get them to be in a state where they can apply the knowledge.”

Trends in Online Education: How Technology Is Helping Nontraditional Students Succeed - CollegeRecruiter.com | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

Student loan debt is in the trillions, the job market feels like it’s never going to properly recover and college tuition prices continue to rise. While it’s unlikely the United States will ever adopt free education options like many European countries, the surge in online learning technology is helping to mitigate some of these issues.

Kim Gaskins:  "Many of us go about our lives constantly surrounded by screens, immersed in various "stories": movies, TV shows, books, plot-driven video games, news articles, advertising, and more. Whether we realize it or not, we're creating new behaviors, routines, mindsets, and expectations around what we watch, read or play—which in turn presents new challenges and opportunities for creators and marketers."

Has Google replaced teaching?

Has Google replaced teaching? | Teachning, Learning and Develpoing with Technology | Scoop.it

"You don't need to teach us. That is what Google is for." #StuVoice #edchat

"This is what a passionate student told a room full of educators at the 2013 Tech Forum in New York in response to a question from social studies teacher Melissa Seideman. She was asking how Digital Native students prefer learning when it comes to technology use."

Jeffrey Earp's curator insight, October 25, 2013 4:11 AM

To put it bluntly, if YOUR teaching (and what you teach) can be replaced by students Googling and tweeting their friends, then yes, YOU should be replaced. Replacing TEACHING as an activity is another matter entirely. Self-guided, student-driven, collaborative approaches bring learners to the centre of the picture but do NOT spell the end of the teacher, quite the opposite. They require an expert, engaged teacher acting as a facilitator, a guide, and - crucially - a learning designer. Next time the "technology vs teacher" question raises its ugly head again, consider that the good ol' printed book is a technology.

“the students participating in this study were randomly assigned to a cooperative learning condition or an individualistic learning condition and were compelled to remain in their assigned conditions for both the regular classroom sessions and a series of homework sessions scheduled on a weekly basis.”

"The results “showed that given a sufficient period of time for the cooperative learning teams to mature, the students in the cooperative learning condition performed substantially better in both the homework and unit tests than those in the individualistic learning condition.”
